Chess Competition 2023

Mazenod Trophy Chess Competition 2023

In February and March, our students returned to the battlefield of the chessboard to compete in the 2023 Mazenod Trophy Chess Competition.   Over 110 students signed up to play the game of triumph and defeat and to demonstrate their prowess at chess whilst also earning points for their House.

This year, Mr Glenn Pabst again generously gave up his lunch time for the duration of the competition and was on hand to supervise every game and manage queries. Competition was strong with many students implementing strategies intended to send shockwaves through their opponent.

Pieces were scattered and kings exposed and at times, players were left asking themselves how they could have overlooked such a crucial detail when their opponent declared “checkmate”.

Being outplayed is humbling but it’s part of the excitement of the game and we extend our congratulations to the following students who were overall winners of their Year group:

Mr Pabst and I thank all the students for their support this year and for their enthusiasm.  As always, we look forward to 2024 and once more putting out the call to arms.
