A Team

Week 9 of Term 1 saw Mazenod A Basketball team head to Ray Owen for the School Sports WA Hills Tournament.

After success in the ACC tournament earlier in the term, and on a 6 and 0 win streak the playing group looked forward to the competition. We identified key match ups and other schools who would prove challenging, with two of these fixtures in the opening two rounds.

Our first opponents were Darling Range Sports College who historically had always been a tough school to beat, however, Mazenod came out and executed their game plan perfectly and comfortably beat out opponents 32-19.

Our second fixture saw a closer match against the team we would subsequently meet in the grand final, beating Lesmurdie Senior High 28-21.

We then comprehensively out played Eastern Hills 35-10 before meeting Mazenod B in our next fixture. The Mazenod v Mazenod fixture saw some great basketball played by both teams in a competitive but respectful manner. Mazenod A ran out eventual winners.

The next fixture was against Mundaring Christian who we had only narrowly defeated in the ACC competition. This game couldn’t have been more of a contrast with Mazenod exerting complete dominance and winning 35-14.

With a berth in the finals already secured the result of our final group game didn’t matter, yet Mazenod came out and comfortably beat Swan View 24-7.

At this stage our opponents in the grand final wasn’t known with the winner of Lesmurdie and Darling Range joining us. Lesmurdie comfortably beat Darling Range to rightly set up a final between the two best teams. The final was a tense affair with Mazenod leading from the outset but some strong 3 point shooting keeping Lesmurdie in the game. When the final buzzer sounded, Mazenod were 4 points ahead and secured their 13th straight win of the season and their second competition win.

Well done to all the students involved for your efforts this term and for representing Mazenod in a truly impressive manner. I am looking forward to the finals next term.
