Grade One

General:
As we approach the end of 2021, we would like to celebrate the immense growth, resilience and overall kindness of each of our Grade 1 students. It has been another turbulent year, however the Grade 1 families have each persevered and displayed the strong sense of community and cooperation which makes Oatlands the special place that it is. All of the Grade 1 teachers were blown away by the effort, energy and overall participation during our whole school dance production. We have very coordinated and talented students! We have loved teaching each of our wonderful Grade 1 students and wish them a restful and adventurous break as they prepare for their next chapter in Grade 2!
English:
In a recent unit of work, students were able to explore an assortment of Dreamtime Stories with a focus on identifying the moral and guiding message. Not only did this encourage a stronger appreciation for the art of storytelling by Australia’s Indigenous community and also allowed for students to create their own narratives, sharing moral lessons which they believe are important. After a year filled with an assortment of books, writing styles and themes, we have deeply enjoyed celebrating the growth that each student has made in English, especially with students publishing their favourite pieces of writing, which they are very eager to share with their families over the past few weeks.
Maths:
In our recent exploration of Australian animals, students have had the opportunity to explore 2D and 3D shapes through the construction of Australian animals and important elements of their habitats. This unit of work showcased each student's expansive creativity and increasing familiarity with the features of shapes. Students also had the opportunity to explore areas of measurement through our Lego unit of work, measuring the length of their awesome creations and comparing the weight of different Lego structures. The Grade 1 teachers have been very proud of the effort and resilience that has been displayed by our mathematicians this term.
Integrated Studies:
Recently, all Grade 1 students were able to showcase their final creations during our Invention Convention. The level of detail, assortment of materials used and creative ways in which students were able to construct their models was at a very high standard. Each student articulated how they constructed their model and the purpose it served in assisting people very clearly, displaying how critically they have been thinking about their constructions over the past few weeks. Students have also been undertaking wellbeing tasks centred around collaboration, with a focus on communicating effectively with others and harmonising their efforts during group tasks.
Well done Grade 1 students on a wonderful year of learning!
