One with the wild - Outdoor Education Camp

The Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp was a great experience and involved a great balance of challenge and fun. I’m not going to lie, the hikes were exhausting, but after 12km of walking in the bush, arriving at our camp was even more exciting! Our cooking skills may need some work, but after some practice on the Trangia stoves our dinner experiences did improve, and we all got a chance to cook, clean, chop and boss other people around.

During the day, the Outdoor Education Group (OEG) had some entertaining activities planned. On Tuesday we abseiled down Brides Cave, a 35 metre drop that was a liberating experience, especially when I have a fear of heights. Once down, we walked through the cave and saw some rather frightening skeletons and stalactites and learnt about the history of Brides Cave and how it formed. After hiking all day Wednesday, we were relieved to have another activity, the High Ropes course. While this, too involved heights, it was made safe and fun by our instructors who let us all have a go on the extensive course.

Each night we would walk to a new campsite, encouraging all campers to develop skills in fast and effective packing. While this camp was physically challenging with new heights and far distances, there were lots of fun moments with old friends and new friends. I left the experience with an appreciation for our instructors who have to do that every week, and more knowledge on the complexities of camping in the wild!

Loreto leadership

Loreto students showed their leadership skills by running activities for Majella Catholic Primary school. A big thank to Alumnus Georgia Williams (Class 2018) who helped make it happen.

The Right Spirit - A History of ACC Sport

Most of our students leave school with fond memories of being involved in, and watching, interschool sporting contests. Ken Spillman’s history of ACC sport in WA – released this month and aptly titled “The Right Spirit” – shows the outstanding contribution John XXIII College has made to the association. It highlights achievements of our athletes, swimmers and teams, and it also celebrates the work of such early staff as Jim Miller and Richie Haddow in building John XXIII’s proud ACC traditions.

What few people know, however, is that former John XXIII College principal, Sr Denise Desmarchelier, played a key role in transitioning the ACC from a small membership organisation run by volunteers to the immense, professional association it is today. In 1982, as ACC President, Sr Denise chaired an interview panel to appoint the ACC’s first employee – a ‘Sporting Administrator’. The successful applicant was Garry McGrath, a physical training instructor with the Royal Australian Navy, and Sr Denise allocated time for Mr Haddow, John XXIII College's Head of Physical Education, to mentor McGrath until he was familiar with the demands of the job.

“The Right Spirit” is packed with information, anecdotes and more than 200 images.
