Year 7 Girls Hockey
Friday October 25th saw 13 year 7 girls head to Footscray to compete in the EMR hockey tournament. Despite a strong change in the weather expected in the morning and the fact that they had played limited games in the lead up to this competition the girls arrived in high spirits.
Our first match was against Mt Waverley. Only a few minutes into the match, the team’s goalie Ella, made a specular save kicking the ball clear of the goal. Unfortunately the rebounded ball took out one of our plays. This meant that Hayley was unable to play for the reminder of the day, but this didn’t stop the girls from giving it their all, finishing the game in a draw at one all. In the remaining three matches, the girls came up against some tough teams (Koonug, Balwyn and Ringwood), but in every game, they put in 100%. Throughout the day, there was a huge improvement in their skills and game play and they were able to finish their last game losing only in the last few minutes of the match by one goal.
The girls showed excellent sportsmanship and determination throughout the day and should be very pleased with their efforts.

Year 8 Girls Table Tennis
Congratulations to Brentwood’s year 8 girls table tennis team. They recently won the Monash Division and competed at the EMR competition held at Kilsyth.
The girls won against Koonung SC 4-2, however lost against both Balwyn HS 1-5 and Ringwood SC 2-4. Unfortunately this placed us 3rd in the pool and they missed out on playing in the semi finals. Even though they didn’t make finals, they games they played were extremely close and competitive.
Team members: Janice Lim, Judy Staebe, Jasmine Lay, Jasmin Bhoday, Jayati Savaliya
Thank you to the student coaches who coached the girls into success at Monash Division; Monica Chen and Crystal Lim.

Region - Year 7 Boys Table Tennis
On Thursday 17th October, 5 keen boys were ready to play some quality games of table tennis! We had a tough pool with Balwyn Secondary College up first. The A team did very well in their first game against a quality opponent, we unfortunately lost the first game 3-3; 10-13; 210-214. Knowing that they were a strong team we knew we had to put that first game behind us and continue the good form we had in the doubles. The next match was against Norwood, the boys continued to build their confidence and won that game 4-2; 14-8; 215-195. The final game in the pool rounds was against East Doncaster, we continued to build the momentum and were able to win comfortably, with a final score of 5-1; 17-3; 213-126.
We had made finals, finishing second in our pool meant that we had to play against the team that finished first in the other pool. The semi-final was going to be against a strong Mount Waverley Secondary College team, they had some very good players in their team and it was very close, however, once again, with some great composure we managed to come out the other side victorious. The final scores were 4-2; 15-8; 225-170. We were into the grand final, and so were Balwyn Secondary College. We knew that we had lost to them at the beginning of the day, but remembered that it was a close match. We had played a lot more table tennis between then and now and just needed to keep the momentum going. We won 2 out of our 4 single matches, it came down to the doubles matches, we had to win one of them to tie it up, Max and Andrew were able to do that with ease, so we had 3 rubbers, they had 2. When we worked back the number of games won we were even, so we knew that we had to win at least 1 of the games in the final rubber to beat them, although winning the rubber would’ve been even better. The pressure was building, and a crowd had gathered, it was all up to Eric and Ethan. They played some fantastic table tennis and even though they didn’t win the rubber, they won 1 out of the 4 games that were played!
We are off to the state championships!! The boys played some amazing table tennis on the day and won some long and hard rallies when it needed to happen. They were all very calm under pressure and did a wonderful job at composing themselves during the final. I was very proud of their behaviour and sportsmanship on the day. Well done boys. We were also lucky enough to have 2 very experienced student coaches with us on the day that assisted with scoring and coaching, they were a great help. Thank you boys. Training has resumed for the A team, they will be competing in the State Championships at MSAC on Friday 29th November. I wish them, and the student coaches, all the best of luck for this competition.

Intermediate Boys Table Tennis
Brentwood’s intermediate boy’s table tennis team competed at EMR finals this week. They are a skilled team that had a combination of year 9 and year 10 students. Our pool games were extremely close throughout the day.
In our first match against Balwyn High, the team played so well. Unfortunately we lost to Balwyn by only 6 little points. The boys tied on sets 3-3, tied on games 11-11, and the points separated us -Brentwood 201 points to Balwyn’s 207 points! The next match against Ringwood SC was long. Every singles and doubles match went to 4 or 5 games. The team kept their composure and won 4-2. The third match we needed to win against Koonung to make the semis. The boys stepped up to the challenge and won 5-1 convincingly!
As the Brentwood team placed second in our pool we needed to play the winning school in the other pool. Our new opponent was Templestowe College. After the singles we were two sets each. Each school won a doubles match so again we tied 3-3! On countback we lost on games 9-11.
A huge effort from the team today, especially since our A1 player was ill. All the boys stepped up and played so well. Congratulations!
Team members: Dylan Li, Tejas Srinivas, James Karabatsos, Ethan Wright, Brysen Famularo (ill).
