Year 10 Image and Text Ensembles

This term our year 10 drama class has been exploring the art of devising ensemble drama. Far from being a simple task, the year 10 students learned the difficulties of collaborating with each other and compromising on issues of opinion. In a term long process, the class applied their acting skills to a series of ensemble tasks, before arriving at their final performance task: converting image into action.

By adopting the Lincoln Centre’s process of Aesthetic Education, students questioned their assumptions and sought to observe with clarity, with the intention of bringing the still image to life. Through all of the rigour, and hard work, three groups developed plays with a clear political message based on an image provided to them. From the images depicted below, students devised performances with the following messages:

  • An exploration of the declining altruism in our society.
  • Addiction to technology, and the associated narcissism that results from it.
  • The pattern of bullying that arises from a bullies own vulnerability.

Although we did not have the opportunity to perform these pieces in a public forum, perhaps opening the minds of audiences, students still benefited from exploring their own mind-sets and subconscious ideals throughout the process.
