After a long year of working hard in class, students from secondary had the opportunity to showcase some of their great work in the EXPO. Students across the Visual Arts, Timber, Metal, STEM and Science, spent the day setting up their display and perfecting what they would say to people checking out their work. It was a wonderful exhibit of the great things that are happening at our wonderful school. Representatives from Regional Development Southern Inland, Camilla Staff and Ingrid Clements made the journey from Goulburn to judge the display and were very impressed with the quality of work they were able to witness. There were some great displays and it was very hard for people to pick their favourite but in the end the following students were selected as winners of awards.

Peoples Choice Winner – Josh Karchinsky – Portable campchair toilet

Peoples Choice Winner – Malcolm Porritt – Sustainable Shipping Container home

Principals Pick – Jacob Piper – Squash line sensor light

Best Invention – Josh Demont – Aquaponics siphon setup

Best Overall Display – Hannah Southwell – Self Watering Mechatronic Pot Plant

Thanks to all the teachers who helped with the day and the parents and community members who were able to look at the students work. We look forward to being able to do it again next year and hopefully tie in with an event so more are able to attend.

Big Sky Thinking Project Profiles

This year, we trialled a new subject called Big Sky Thinking with our Stage 4 group. Students were allocated one hour a week where they were able to work on their own passion projects. Below are some project profiles, explaining what students were able to produce in this subject.

The problem I set out to solve …

I had noticed that whenever I wanted to shop online for clothes, that I struggled to remember the names of websites and find what I was looking for. I wanted to help other women, teen girls and kids out there to find the right type of style and size of clothing for them.

My project process involved…

1. Researching clothing websites

2. Learning how to make a website

3. Designing what my website looked like

4. Sorting the clothing stores into the categories that they belonged in.

5. Adding links to the clothing stores to my website

6. Getting Miss Tyson to edit and check over my website

7. Publishing the website for anyone to access.

Outcome of my project...

I successfully created an online shopping website for women of all ages to help them find clothing that they like quickly and easily.

The problem we set out to solve …

I wanted to make an efficient portable camping toilet to help people be more comfortable when going to the toilet in the great outdoors.

Our project process involved…

I had to research what chair would be the easiest and cheapest chair to cut a hole in. We decided to use an old camping chair that we were given from Miss Tyson. Then we discussed what we could do so people wouldn't fall through the hole. We decided to buy a toilet seat from Kanga. We wanted to still be able to fold up the chair so had to figure out how the toilet seat could be detachable. We decided to get velcro tape and stick it to both the bottom of the toilet seat and around the hole in the chair. We noticed it wasn’t sticking properly so we superglued the velcro on the seat and it worked perfectly. We also attached a cylindrical piece of wood to the arm of the chair so that toilet paper could be stored there.

Outcome of my project...

We were really happy with our finished project and were lucky to get the People's Choice at our school expo. We intend to use it on fishing trips in the future.

The problem I set out to solve …

I wanted to decrease the amount of concussions in our small town by raising awareness and educating others.

My project process involved…

Creating a Google Slides presentation, researching the science of concussions, conducting interviews with people who have been concussed, making a Scratch informative/funny video and making a Kahoot with questions around concussions.

Outcome of my project...

I explained the dangers of concussions and showed the various parts of my project to students, teachers and parents at the BCS Expo.

The problem I set out to solve …

I wanted to raise money for the farmers that are currently in drought.

My project process involved…

Sending letters to the local shops asking if I could put collection tins in their shops.

Decorating the tins

Putting the tins in each shop that said yes

Collecting the tins on the agreed dates

Counting the money

Banking the money with Drought Angels

Outcome of my project

I raised over $1,200 and have donated the money to Drought Angels. This money will help farmers in need.

This is a select few of the amazing projects that students were able to create in this subject. They should be proud of their achievements.

TAS Faculty Update

Students studying in the Technology and Applied Studies Faculty usually spend the last term of the year, trying to complete their projects in time for assessment deadlines and to be able to take home their projects, possibly as Christmas gifts for someone special. This year has been no different with a great range of items coming from the timber and metal workshops as well as some fabulous and professional-looking cakes being seen in the food technology kitchen.

With the kitchen due to get an upgrade over the Christmas break and throughout Term 1, it was with mixed emotions that Stage 5 Food Technology, Yr 11 Hospitality and the final Stephanie Alexander classes took part in the last cooking lessons in a kitchen that has stood the test of time for over 30 years. Some students reflected that this was the same kitchen that older family members and parents had been taught in. It certainly has seen a lot of students move through it.

Whilst classes have managed in the current room, it is time that our students learn food preparation skills in a kitchen that is closer to the industry standard, that is modern and meets regulations for the teaching of VET Hospitality. We are looking forward to the beginning of Term 2, when we will be able to make and serve beverages directly from the kitchen, and ensure our students are well prepared for large events like the Touch-Netball Carnival, where we served over 800 hot beverages at our two mobile stands earlier in the term.

We are grateful to the community for their continued support of our kitchen program with their donations of surplus foods, plastic takeaway containers and magazines. Additionally we would like to thank the food businesses of Boorowa and Young for hosting our Hospitality students to complete their compulsory work-placement hours. Without it, these students would not have a real appreciation of the pressures and expectations of the hospitality industry.

Looking forward to welcoming you to our new kitchen in our 150th year of education at Boorowa Central School in 2020.

Yesterday, our secondary students sprinted towards the holidays with an Amazing Race. Challenges that were scattered across the school and town evoked a competitive spirit amongst all. There was no mercy shown and egos were crushed, but all crossed the finish line.
