Year 6

Assistant Principal's Report

Electives are up and running for Term 2!

Our second block of elective sessions have started and it is so wonderful to see the enjoyment and engagement of all our senior students in their chosen elective.

One of the reasons I really love our Elective program for the senior students is that it gives them the opportunity to have a try of something new, potentially out of their comfort zone.   Watching students begin to learn orienteering, cooking or coding and seeing their faces as they master new skills really is a joy to witness.   I have loved seeing students embrace ideas such as 'Maths Masters' which is aimed at challenging them to use mathematics to solve complex problems.

Another reason I love our Electives program is that it also gives our teachers the chance to share one of their interests with students.  Seeing our teachers so excited about sharing their own ideas and experiences and watching how their relationships with the students really strengthen over the term is great to watch.

I am lucky enough to be involved in our Rotary Junior Community Award elective this term, which is focused on Community Service.  We are assisting an organisation called Backpacks for Vic Kids who provide personal belongings and items of comfort to young children entering foster care or crisis care.   We had the founder of the organisation, Sally Beard, come and present to the group to let us know about what they do to help children in need.  The statistics she provided really opened the eyes of the students in the group and motivated them to join together to help others.  The group are excited about collecting, packing and delivering their packs this term and information will be shared with the school community about how we can all help.   We will continue to share updates of our project throughout the term.  It makes me proud that our students are embracing our school mission of becoming 'respectful and informed members of the local and global community'.

Have a great week!
