Primary Co-Curricular Report
Primary Co-Curricular Report
It has been an extremely busy fortnight of co-curricular activities. There has been SAPSASA Knockout football and soccer as well as a full program of weekend sport.
Football
The past two weeks has proven challenging for both of our football teams. The Year 6/7s went down to Cardijn at home and then to Westminster at Westminster in two tough matches. The 3/4/5s ventured to Trinity and went down by less than two goals whilst St Michael's proved too tough on the weekend winning by four goals.
Soccer
After a tough program, the 6/7A's fought out a 3-3 draw with Immanuel and went down to Rostrevor this week. The boys have looked flat after two knockout matches on top of club and school commitments. The long weekend has come at the right time so the boys can freshen up.
Mr Niedzwiecki’s 6/7B team continues to improve. Although they haven’t got the wins, the boys continue to improve and show understanding of structures and game plans.
The 3/4/5 boys have had a mixed bag with some crushing victories and slim defeats. The boys continue to perform well and try their best no matter the situation.
Basketball
The 6/7 Black team have had some mixed results this fortnight. A good win in Week 4 was followed up with a heavy loss to St Paul's last week. The Blue team were much the same with a good win against Marryatville and a heavy loss to St Paul's Wolves.
The Year 4/5 boys have now won a few games on the trot. The boys continue to improve and understand the intricacies of basketball. Their depth will be tested over the next couple of weeks as some players are away and some new boys come into the team.
SAPSASA Knockout Soccer
Game 1 - Blackfriars vs Lockleys North
The 6/7A's lined up with the same structure that has had it undefeated so far this season. A couple of injuries sidelined a couple of key players, however this provided an opportunity for other players to step up and fill these roles. Blackfriars started the game well, opening with the first attack of the game but from then on Lockleys took control of the game.
We gave away possession too easily, our passing game was poor and our errors were ruthlessly punished. 4-0 down at half time and an uphill battle for the second half. Not much different in the second half and momentum was completely with Lockleys, they created their own luck and deserved the win.
An uncharacteristic performance from such a strong playing group, one we'll quickly want to forget. Final score 8-0
Game 2 - Blackfriars vs Nazareth
With knowledge Nazareth had beaten Lockleys North earlier on in the day, we knew we were up for another tough battle. A change of structure and a reshuffle of players for the second game. Our plan; to compact the midfield and hit them on the counter attack with our quicks on the wings.
Again we started the game slowly and were punished early on, 2-0 down within 5 minutes. Luck was not on our side as we couldn't put any of our opportunities away. Finally managing a goal just before half time, our first for the day, 3-1 down at half time.
Knowing anything but a win would give us a chance of progressing, the A's came out in the second half full of belief they could still win it. Sticking to the same game plan, we struck early!! The boys were definitely hungry for more, we started winning the 50/50's and momentum was starting to swing our way.
The home team broke away again, 5-2 with about 15 minutes to go. Staring at yet another defeat, credit to all the boys they never gave up. Our ball possession started flowing, the ball speed and combination play improved and we had Nazareth on the back foot.
Eventually our pressure was awarded with a penalty and we scored! Credit to the boys they showed excellent character and great fighting spirit, with 5 minutes to go we scored twice more from two corners.
Final score 5-5, forcing the game into a penalty shoot out. We eventually went down in the penalty shoot out, but they can definitely hold their heads up high with the way they played.
A learning curve for all, we'll lick our wounds, learn from this and move onto the next game.
SAPSASA Knockout Football
Blackfriars took on Nazareth in the first round of the SAPSASA Knockout Football on our home oval, St Dominic's. The boys started really well and skipped out to a two goal lead after the first quarter. Blackfriars kicked four goals to nothing in the second term to go into the main break 41 points in front. Blackfriars controlled the air and their bigger bodies made tackling difficult for Nazareth.
Blackfriars piled on 11 goals to 1 after half time to run out convincing winners against a gallant Nazareth team.
The final score was 18.11.119 to 2.2.14
