BOOK PARADE REMINDER

Thank you to those families who have attended the Book Fair in the past 2 weeks. There have been many exciting purchases.  The Book Fair closed on  Thursday 14th November at lunchtime.

Don't forget to come to school on Friday dressed as your favorite book character.

Grandparents Day

To celebrate National Grandparents Day, Cranbourne South Primary invited all students' Grandparents into the classrooms on Friday 1st November and what a joyous morning it was!

The school participated in the 'Ask Gran, Not Google' federally funded project. The project encourages children to seek the wisdom and life experience of a senior before searching the internet for answers. During the morning, students were provided with the opportunity to ask the Grandparents questions and this sparked many wonderful, rich conversations. It was beautiful to see our students practising their social skills and the Grandparents sharing their expertise. Thank you to all who attended!

Koori Cultural Visit

3a, 3b and 3/4a were lucky enough to participate in a visit from the Koori Cultural Leaders. We learned about different symbols that Aboriginal people use to create drawings!

Did you know that these paintings tell different stories?

We had so much fun creating . We used chalk, pastels and crayons to draw with.

WHOLE SCHOOL STEP-THROUGH (TRANSITION) PROGRAM

The 2020 Foundation students are participating in their  Step Up Program. They have attended school to explore literacy and numeracy based activities and meet other Foundation students; both current and future.  These transition sessions provide an introduction to a school classroom environment and classroom routines. Many are also attending a one on one meeting to take part in EYE (Early Years Evaluation) testing with a staff member.

This week the Year 1 -5 students have also begun their formal Step Through program visiting a new classroom environment with students in their cohort. Students will take part in activities in week 6, 8 and 10 of this term and get to know different staff members. Our transition policy and plan works to ensure that all students move towards 2020 with confidence and enthusiasm. Talk to your child about what they did when they moved to the next year level.

COAL CREEK EXCURSION

On Thursday 31st October, the Year 1's and 2's travelled back in time to the early 1900's at Coal Creek! Students were thrilled to attend an old fashioned school and discovered how different school life was over 100 years ago. They also visited many shops and houses and enjoyed learning about family life for early settlers while they made damper on the fire. The excursion linked in perfectly with our Term 4 Guided Inquiry unit, 'Through Generations'. Despite the heat, a great day was had by all and it was a wonderful opportunity for students to observe how things have changed over time.

Outdoor Classroom Day was on Thursday, Nov 7th. Years 3 and 4 were having the best outdoor classroom day at camp and the rest of us made use of the weather and learning outdoors at CSPS. There were students outdoor reading, making kites, doing outdoor maths and scavenger hunting. Even though the weather was a little windy and cold (we made it before the rain) we put on our jackets and jumpers and made the outdoors our classroom. Students were engaged and having so much fun.

WHY OUTDOOR PLAY AND LEARNING?

When teachers take learning outdoors they report some powerful impacts: Children’s behaviour improves, whole classes are excited to learn, and individuals who feel inhibited by the curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment.

When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors. Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.

Find out more about the benefits of outdoor play and learning and the difference that Outdoor Classroom Day is making in schools around the world in our latest report, The impact of outdoor learning and playtime at school – and beyond.

Cardboard Challenge

On Wednesday 30th October, seven Year 5 students went to Cranbourne West Primary School to participate in the first ever Casey Cardboard Challenge.

Two teams worked during lunchtimes and weekly sessions over 8 weeks to plan, design and construct a cardboard arcade game. The games had to be fully functional arcade games constructed out of cardboard. These were then presented at Cranbourne West Primary school on game day along with other participating schools in the Casey area. The challenge teams ranged from Year 5 to Year 8 students with three schools participating this year.

Once set up, the schools enjoyed the chance to play each others games using tokens and awarding prizes to players. The work and effort the CSPS teams put in paid off as they won some awards on the day!  The “Fireballs” topped all teams with the “most tokens winner” of the day, as well as “best special features” and “most artistic” awards. While team “Feed Homer” were awarded “craziest design” award and the “Amazing Effort” award. Congratulations to Chyler, Ebony, Lenny, You-Fong, Marlie, Bailey, James and Koby for your enthusiastic and collaborative efforts!

CSPS is  looking forward to participating in this event again next year, it was such a fun experience!  A special thanks to Reece from Camp Australia for helping the teams make their creations and giving up his time to help out on Challenge Day. The teams and Mrs. Wilson are so appreciative of his help!
