Junior School News

From the Head of Junior School

At last Friday’s Junior School Assembly we inducted the 2020 Junior School House Captains and Vice House Captains. The process for selecting the House Captains is fairly simple. Each prospective Captain presents a speech to his or her House. The students from Year Three to Six then vote on the boy and girl who they feel would best lead their House. The person with the highest number of votes is the Captain and second highest is the Vice Captain. As part of the presentation of the positions at Assembly I spoke of the leadership role that they will undertake throughout the year. We considered the following Chinese proverb: Not the cry, but the flight of the wild duck, leads the flock to fly and follow. In reflecting on the proverb I asked the students to consider how they would lead. It is not enough to tell people what to do. It is not enough to talk and point. If you are to truly lead, you must lead by example. While the selection of Captains is, to a large extent, based on the delivery of the speeches that they prepare for their respective Houses, how they act in the role is how they will be judged as leaders.  They will be judged on their actions, how they conduct themselves, how they treat others.

It is my hope that our House Captains and Vice House Captains will lead the Junior School through their actions as much as through what they say. It was explained to everyone that leadership is not a badge to say that one person is more important than another. Leadership is a responsibility to put the needs of others before your own needs. To make sure that others feel valued. Our student leaders recognize that, without the help and support of the other students, they would not be in a leadership position at all.

Of course our Captains and Vice Captains will not be the only student leaders in the Junior School. There will be many others who, through their actions in the playground, the classroom or in the broader community, will step up to help lead the school. Year Six is a time when many of our students do step up and lead. They lead as role models to the younger students. They lead by extending the hand of friendship to our new students. They lead by helping out around the school whenever they see the opportunity. I look forward to working with all of our young leaders throughout the year.

Essendon Football Club Visit

On Friday, February 14, the Junior School students were fortunate enough to be visited by the Essendon Football Club on their tour to Bendigo. The eight players attending signed their autographs, played kick-to-kick, answered questions and completed a skills session with the Year Four and Year Five students. We are very grateful for this visit and would like to thank the Essendon Football Club for coming and promoting football for the enthusiastic girls and boys of our school (and maybe even a few teachers).

One day in the future, we may even see some of our students playing in the AFL or the AFLW!
