Students enjoying the Knitting Club with Ms Dee McQueen

We are super excited to be back in the library and planning for the events this year.

We have an exceptional reading culture here at Box Hill High School and we love seeing the students back in the space, reading, browsing, and recommending new books.

Book Club is back!

Every Thursday lunchtime, the library hosts Book Club. Students bring their lunch and discuss a prearranged topic like ‘Best Series – what was it and why?’ which is posted on the Book Club TEAMS channel every Thursday morning. The group share their ideas about the topic, the book that they are currently reading and help to select new books to add to our collection. If you would like to join, please see Ms Pearson or Ms McQueen in the library.

Starting Term 2: Brand New Parent and Student Book Club

If you love reading and would like to share your passion for books with your nearest and dearest, then please join our brand new online parent and student Book Club.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

We know that everybody is busy and so we will select one book per term that both a parent and student can read at their leisure. At the end of the term, a date will be set where we meet either in person or online via TEAMS and discuss the value of the book, its characters, themes, issues and the overall enjoyment of this experience.

WHY JOIN?

The breadth and scope of Young Adult fiction has evolved over the years and now includes more realism, romance, diversity, and inclusivity than ever before. As parents, we spend hours of our time reading to our children but often this stops when our children become proficient readers themselves. Sharing ideas and thoughts about a book, understanding how different generations process important ideas and themes, and bridging and reforming a reading connection is a fabulous way to engage and support your child’s education. Many of the themes covered in English including illusion, reality, belonging, identity, conflict, agency, and friendship are explored in the books that we will read. It is also a fabulous opportunity to branch into this amazing genre.

Please send me an email at kylie.pearson@education.vic.gov.au with your name and your child’s name and year if you would like to be involved.

Children’s Book Council Shadow Judging Project

Last year our school participated in the first Shadow Judging pilot project run by the Children’s Book Council Awards (CBCA). This project had students read and review the Top 6 books that were nominated by the CBCA in the Older Readers category.  This year, we plan to be involved again and so we are looking for any students who are interested to see either Ms McQueen or Ms Pearson in the library. The 15 books that have made the longlist are already up on the website and the shortlist, that is the Top 6 books, are set to be announced on Wednesday 17th March. Students who sign up with be provided with a copy of the six books and will be expected to read and write a short review of each book. Then in Term 3, the group will meet either in person or via TEAMS to discuss which book they believe should be announced the winner.

If you love reading and want to be a Shadow Judge, then come and see Ms Pearson or Ms McQueen in the library.

Gale Research Database

If your students need some help with their research for various projects, make sure you log in to this handy database, found on Compass>Favourites>BHHS Library Gale in Context. The password is found on our library website, and check out all the other resources we provide on our web app. (Compass>Favourites>BHHS Library). We have separate pages for Books & Reading, Online learning, and research and study skills.

Help us Collect Bread Tags

To support the Breadtags for Wheelchairs Project, the Library is collecting these pesky items all year. This incredible project aims to recycle these small pieces of plastic and raise funds to buy wheelchairs for those who cannot afford it. https://ozbreadtagsforwheelchairs.org.au/our-story/ You can earn house points by bringing them along and placing them in the jar at the Library front desk.

Knitting Club in the Library

Each Wednesday lunchtime we are hosting the Knitting Club. We have wool and needles to share and so far we have had lots of keen Year 7s learning to knit, so come along and join us.
