Year 7 Reflections on starting High School

I have found high school fun because I can move around with my friends after every period, it's also nice to have more freedom and independence compared to in primary school. It was fun to be able to connect with others during break times, there were so many interesting and exciting things to do around the school.

One of the things I dreaded most for high school was finding the classrooms and getting to the correct classes with the correct things on time because I hadn’t always been the best at organisation. But soon I learnt that I had nothing to dread. With the help and support of my teachers and classmates, I was able to bring the right things to the right classes on time, remember how to get to the classrooms and memorise timetables in no time at all. High school has helped me become more organised and helped me learn and work more efficiently.

Walking into high school, the scary part was the nerves. The school bell rang and as I walked into the classroom with my bag, I felt scared seeing my new class. I set my bag down and as we started to get an overview of the school, I felt that everyone was looking at me and I had done something wrong. When the bell rang for lunch, we filed out in two separate lines and arrived at the cafeteria. I sat there alone, but then someone came over to my table and struck up a conversation. This made me relax and my nerves weren’t as bad as they were when we started. High school got a lot better after that, as we did cool experiments like setting our hands on fire. It was most of all fun.

When I first walked into Box Hill High School, I was excited because I had the impression that it is active, creative, and artistic. The teachers encourage the students to share their talents and to get better at the things they need to learn more about. The subjects are all fun and they teach me new facts and other things I did not know. One thing that I really love about Box Hill, is that everyone is welcoming and respectful. Another thing about Box Hill that was difficult was remembering the classrooms and where the Junior Coordinators office was. Everyone has their own talents, perspectives, and personalities. High school is helping me learn to try my best at everything that I do and to be organised and aware of the time. The activities and clubs are nice, and everybody gets to enjoy their time at recess or lunch with theirs friends or having fun at the clubs.

The first term of high school has been incredible. Everything about high school is fun and there is never a dull moment. One thing that has stood out to me is the extra-curricular activities.  The school provides so many extra things to do, such as clubs and fortnightly sport. So far, I have loved doing Chess club and Dodgeball club. Fortnightly sport is very fun, as you get to play sport with your friends. There is something for everybody to enjoy and this has been a highlight for in my first term of high school.

When I first came to this school, I didn’t know anyone in Year 7. This wasn’t the first time this had happened though. In Year 1, I went to a new school where I knew no one. This time though, I quickly got to know people and became friends with many people in my class and I am really liking it here. It’s much better than primary school as I found it was easy to make friends.
