Haka Warriors

For the last 20 weeks, a group of 19 students of various Pasifika backgrounds have engaged in the Haka Warrior Program. This program was run with the support of  PCYC Blacktown. Students from both the High School and the IEC came together as team to connect culturally through the learning and choreographing of Hakas and to help them develop the key skills of discipline, resilience and respect to be used both inside and outside of school.

For the past two terms, the Haka team has spent countless hours practising, this included many lunchtimes to perfect their Hakas and build their team. Throughout the time spent together, the team have formed a really strong connection, which has seen them become a ‘whanau’, the Maori word for family. PCYC Blacktown members, Tom Vaikai and Easter Tatupu and Evans High School teachers, Kimberly Celeban and Amyleigh Elliott supported these students throughout the program, ensuring they were at every practice to help the team to develop their sense of family and strong cultural connection with one another. Among the group of students, some strong leaders emerged. David, Martin, Lianga, Aka and Mapafisi ensured the group stayed connected and worked to their potential throughout the program.

On the last day of the term, the hard work and dedication of the team paid off as they competed against seven other schools from the area in the ‘PCYC Blacktown Haka Warrior Competition’ at the Sydney Coliseum in Rooty Hill.

The Evans Haka Team did themselves, their Whanau and of course the school proud as they performed their Hakas with pride and determination. After competing against all of the schools, the Evans High School Team were awarded first place by a panel of esteemed judges which included NSW Police Assistant Commissioner, Karen Webb, and the CEO of PCYC NSW, Dominic Teakle, who both personally congratulated our team on their commitment to and passion in their Hakas.

Mrs Celeban and Miss Elliott could not be any prouder of the young men in the team and the way they carried themselves on the day. They were humble winners who favoured connecting with students from other schools over winning. Overall, a huge congratulations to the Evans High School Haka Warrior Champions – David, Martin, Lianga, Lata, Tau, Scully, Bing, Peter, Puri, Rex, Aka, Phelix, Mapafisi, Iliajai, Rewiri, Malakai, Siakisone, Faauma and Andrew.

Harmony Day

On the 18th of March, we had our annual Harmony Day in Evans Style! Although it was a really rainy and wet day. It did not rain on our parade. In Evans' spirit, students and staff coloured the quad with their beautiful cultural costumes. It was spectacular to see so many students wear their cultural costume with so much pride.

The quad was not only brightly lit by the colours of the costumes. There was a beautiful mix of aromas in the air from all the different cultural food stalls. There was fragrant biryani, flavourful butter chicken, dumplings, pizzas, sausage sizzles and so much more!

The wonderful performers captivated our attention with their amazing cultural performances. The support that the audience gave was exceptionally encouraging for their peers.

Harmony Day was a huge success, a massive tribute to all the students, teachers, SASS staff and SLSO's for giving all their time even behind the scenes to make it such a harmonious day!

Also, a huge thank you to the amazing entertainment team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to create such a wonderful experience for the cultural concert!

International Women's Day

We celebrated our International Women's Day on the 29th of March. Our wonderful student leaders led a fantastic presentation about International Women's Day. They did an amazing job at teaching the students of Evans High about the the importance of recognising why we need to celebrate International Women's Day.

Students of Evans High also learnt about the impacts of COVID-19 on women, heard from women in leadership speak about how they got there as well as brainstorm ways in which they could help make a difference for gender equality.

Congratulations to Trey, Rubi, Coda, Rajan, Fereshteh, Cassidy, Neha, Cody, Tara, Medhat, Luke, Faidon and Krishnay!
