Learning an instrument is a skill that uses many parts of the brain so that learning subjects like maths, reading and science are easier to understand.

Playing an instrument for several years boosts brain power even more! It can also help you to relax, make you happy and very importantly, make you feel awesome.

Debbie's five children all learned violin and piano and when they return home, they head straight for the piano which, as their teacher, fills her heart with joy!

After singing for many years with the Tas University Music Society (TUMS), the Tas Conservatorium Chorale and St Mary's Cathedral Choir, Debbie now accompanies the singing at the Vigil Mass at St Mary's on Saturday evenings. She also enjoys gardening (when it's warm), bushcare, cooking, giving things a new lease of life at the Community/Mens' Shed and volunteering at her local Primary school.

Devon Robson - Guitar

Devon Robson is a multi-skilled guitarist based in Hobart, Australia. He is an  experienced musician having performed in ensembles ranging from Jazz through to contemporary music groups, percussion guitar, and bands. He has a Bachelor of Music degree from UTAS Hobart Conservatorium majoring in Jazz and Professional Studies. Devon has performed across Australia in numerus bands and productions.

In addition to Mount Carmel College, Devon teaches at The Friends School, Southern Music and privately at his home studio in Forcett.

Devon believes you need two elements to be a good musician and achieve your true musical voice:

1. Technique - this is the “mechanics” of playing the guitar. i.e. moving fingers, picking etc.

2. Deeper Dimension - this is your ‘unique musical voice’ and ‘passion (enjoyment)’.

The goal is for the student to be able to play so that the  music effortlessly and seamlessly flows which is achieved  by experimenting with the developed ‘mechanics’ and ‘unique musical voice’. A student will need to develop their Technique to achieve this to make the magic happen: that is where the experimentation and learning comes in to play.

Craig Russell - Trombone

Craig Russell is the Trombone teacher at Mount Carmel.  He is an experienced musician and dedicated teacher, who has been teaching at St Virgil's Junior school for many years and has supported the Secondary Music program by teaching trombone in the classroom in addition to teaching students individually.

He currently has vacancies for anyone who would like to learn the trombone.

Anita Schleebs - Violin/Viola

The violin has been an extension of Anita for quite some time and her love of music has been just as long!  Throughout her Primary and High School years Anita was always a member of the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra (TYO). Not only attending music camps in Tasmania, Anita travelled interstate to the National Music Camps. The social aspect of these camps was a great attraction but more so was also finding ‘your people’, those who loved music just as much as you.  Anita was a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra and Camerata Australia in 1998.

Whilst studying at the Tasmanian Conservatorium Anita discovered an interest in teaching and a love for musicals. She started playing in the pit (where the orchestra and bands are located in the theatre) of many local musicals where you can still find her for all big and small local productions. Anita plays with the Hobart Chamber Orchestra and also with Strings on Fire.

In 2019 she joined the AUSTA Orchestra, a collection of string teachers from around Australia led by the infamous Stephen Chin, and the group toured throughout Europe.  This tour was enjoyable of course but again the social side and the opportunity to play in some amazing venues made it very memorable.
