LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library...

Welcome to week 3, I hope you’ve all had a great start to the term.

This week Kindergarten are continuing to look at whether texts (ie: books) can be either real or not real. We’re introducing the terms fiction and non-fiction and learning how we can tell the difference when we read a book. One of the easiest ways to tell if a book is made up (fiction) is if animals talk in the story. As many picture books that younger readers enjoy have animals that speak, it is an easy way for them to identify if a book is fiction or non-fiction. There have been a few ‘interesting’ conversations when it turns to books about fairies being real or not real as we all know, the tooth fairy is very real!  This week we will tour the non-fiction section and students will be encouraged to borrow one of these books for the first time.

For Year One and Two, we’re looking in more detail at the elements of fiction (ie: their structure and language features) and also how fiction is organised in the library  (alphabetical order by author’s surname). We’ve enjoyed reading Philip Bunting’s fictional book ‘Wombat’ and next week we begin to look at his non-fiction stories, using World Book Web to find some interesting facts about some Australian animals found in his books.

Stage 2 are researching an Australian author they believe should be the next ‘Australian Literature Legend’ and earn a stamp from Australia Post. For the first time, they’ve joined a Library Google Classroom page and will be researching and presenting their findings on Google Slides. Today, 3/4D found some amazing facts about a few of their favourite authors. Did you know that Jackie French has authored over 150 books? Neither did I!

Stage 3 are continuing to complete their own Graphic Novel page and have loved using the website Storyboard That to create a digital version. I’ve been so surprised how quickly they’ve picked it up and they look fantastic! I look forward to sharing these with you in the coming weeks.

Author Visit - Phillip Gwynne

Last Friday, Year 9 and 10 had the pleasure of acclaimed Australian author, Phillip Gwynne, visiting our school to talk about his novel ‘Deadly, Unna?’ (which Year 10 are currently studying) and also learn more about the writing process. Phillip has published many books over the last twenty years and our primary students particularly enjoy his Aussie Bites books and ‘My Dad Does Yoga’ picture book. The feedback from students has been really positive and we hope his insights about ‘Deadly, Unna?’ have given Year 10 valuable information to complete their assessment task.
