Reconciliation week

National Reconciliation Week falls May 27 – June 3 each year, with these dates commemorating the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo Decision.

This year’s theme of In this together is, of course, particularly resonant at this time. Although we’re not all together at school yet, we encourage you to participate however you can. This year also marks twenty years since 250,000 Australians walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge (and bridges all over the country) as part of the People’s Walk for Reconciliation, becoming one of the largest displays of public support for a single cause in Australian history.

Reconciliation Australia have put together a great list of resources, outlining 20 ways to be in this together in 2020 including ideas like hosting an online screening of a

Reconciliation Film Club documentary,  cooking a dish using native ingredients from your local area or tuning into In Concert Together: Busby Marou, Alice Skye and Jimblah hosted by Christine Anu on Facebook Live and ABC Radio 9:05pm Friday 29 May.

Northcote High School acknowledges the Wurundjeri people as the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land on which we come together to learn, and pays respect to their Elders past, present and future.

We also acknowledge the diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, from across Australia, who live and learn in our community.

Raise - In School Mentoring Opportunity (ISMO)

We are thrilled to welcome back Raise, who over the last few years have delivered their highly regarded mentoring program to NHS students. Normally, this program runs throughout Term 2 -3… but of course things have been a bit different this year!

We are so excited to let you know that the program, open to students in Year 7-8 will begin again next term. We have approximately thirty places available, and can’t wait to get started!

Learn more about this mentoring opportunity

ISMO is an evidence-based program that matches NHS students a trained mentor from the community. It’s an opportunity for students who would benefit from a neutral, positive role model in their life. Each week we meet up, chat, play games, build connections and learn about ourselves and each other.

Students who have participated in ISMO in the past speak very highly about it, and In fact, 99% of participants say they enjoyed the program and 97% would recommend it to a friend.

If you or your child is interested in participating, please contact our Mental Health Practitioner, Kat Brissett brissett.katherine.l@edumail.vic.gov.au
