From Student to Staff

The College has been around for 44 years this year, and over this time it has changed, expanded and built up a community in which you are all involved in today. A number of our past students, since attending, have gone on to become valued staff members here at the College. Below is Cara Leigh's (Class of '11) reflection.
What years did you attend the College?
I started Kinder in 1999 and I graduated Year 12 in 2011.
What is your fondest memory of your years of being a student?
In Primary School, I remember the daily rush of adrenaline at the sound of the lunch bell, as we would sprint to the back of the oval to 'bags' the best 'base' behind the playground. Later, it became a race to claim the basketball courts before the older kids kicked us off.
Another highlight was my Year 4 class reciting our times tables as quickly and loudly as we possibly could, while physically standing on our tables. Sadly, I don't think that's allowed anymore (OHS and all!).
In Secondary, a highlight would be challenging myself to do Duke of Ed, when I already knew I would hate camping. It turned out to be a lot of fun, but I still hate camping.
Another great memory is competing at beach volleyball tournaments - a massive shout out to Mr Roy Dekker for all those lunchtimes he generously sacrificed to train us! Sorry, we never brought you home the gold.
What are some of the main differences about WCC now compared to when you attended?
Current students, you may think the uniform rules are very strict, but I would like to let you know that they were once even stricter. You guys have got it easy.
What has never changed?
Tyndale is still the best House. Once a Tyndalian, always a Tyndalian.
How long have you been with the College and what is your role?
I joined the WCC team in 2021 as one of the Student Wellbeing Coordinators in Primary. In 2022, I also joined the Secondary team and teach Biblical Studies, Personal Development and Physical Education.
What do you love most about your role/the WCC community?
I love getting to work with a passionate group of people who love God and love others. It is a blessing to be able to openly express my faith in my workplace. I love seeing students develop their own passion for God, discover their giftings and learn to live out their faith authentically.
Any final thoughts/reflections on your time at WCC over the years?
I'm very grateful for the teachers and staff who helped shaped me into the person that I am today. I have some fantastic memories of my schooling years. It wasn't always easy and I certainly wasn't a perfect student, but I'm thankful that my teachers saw the potential in me and encouraged me to live up to it. It really does take a village to raise a child and I'm proud to now be a small part of that village at WCC.
