Level 5

Spelling

The students will continue to use the Jolly Phonics program to build upon their knowledge of prefixes and suffixes as well as deepen their understanding of verb, adverbs and prepositional phrases

Spelling Key Questions

How can you apply your knowledge of spelling and grammar features when writing poetry?

Reading

This term the students will be extending their comprehension skills by focusing on inferring.

Definition: Readers use the clues within the text to figure out the meaning.

Purpose: For students to learn how to understand what is written in a text, might not always mean exactly what it says.

Students need to look for clues and figure out the meaning, purpose, or idea behind a text without it being stated in black and white. This strategy incorporates high critical thinking skills and pushes students to deepen their understanding of the text.

Reading Key Questions

Why do you think that happened?

What clues did the author give to lead you to that conclusion?

Writing

During Writer’s Workshop this term, the students will be building upon their knowledge of poetry. There will be a particular focus on our students using their voice, sentence fluency and poetic devices to express their ideas through different forms of poetry.

Writing Key Questions

What can you do to improve the rhythm of my poem?

Are there better word choices that you can make?

What poetic devices can I use to improve my poem?

This term, we will be starting out looking at the Cartesian plane, followed by a unit on time. In this unit, we will be looking at 24-hour time, elapsed time, reading timetables and schedules. Following this, we will be looking at angles, chance and probability using fractions, BODMAS and will finish the term with a financial planning unit. Throughout the term, we will be having focus revision lessons from Term Three content, based on responses from the students and what they feel they need further clarification on from remote learning.

Maths Key Questions

How can we convert 24-hour time to 12-hour time?

How do I use a protractor to measure different angles?

What do I need to consider when planning a family budget for a week?

Inquiry

In Level 5, our Inquiry unit is ‘Life in the Extreme’ and focuses on the structural features and adaptations that animals need to survive in extreme environments. Students will be investigating the types of extreme environments that animals and plants have to adapt to survive in to avoid extinction. They will identify behaviours that animals adopt including migration and hibernation that help them survive in different environments. They will be developing their knowledge and understanding through watching a number of documentaries from David Attenborough and National Geographic in addition to personal research. A student-directed project will complete this inquiry focus. An animal will be chosen from an extreme environment and students will have to design adaptations to help it survive global warming for the next 100 years.

Inquiry Key Questions

How do animals and plants adapt and evolve to extreme environments and weather conditions in order to avoid extinction?

How could animals adapt to live in different extreme environments?
