Welcome to Term 4
Literacy
Reading:
This term Level 1 students will continue to strengthen their understanding of comprehension strategies such as identifying facts and opinions, comparing and contrasting and making inferences. We continue to focus on developing students’ confidence of reading both independently and with others. We will provide opportunities for students to revise and practise reading strategies such as lips the fish, stretchy snake and flippy dolphin.
Questions you could ask you kids while reading:
- How can you tell if this is a fact or an opinion?
- How are these two characters/settings/ storylines similar? What is different?
- What reading strategy can be used to work out the tricky word?
- What information does this picture give you?
- How is the character feeling? How do you know?
Writing:
This term we will continue students’ exposure to different text types focusing on procedural texts and poetry. Students’ will further develop their knowledge of the 6+1 traits organisation and word choice through understanding how procedural texts and poems are structured and the language used to create such texts. We will provide opportunities for students to engage with, plan and write procedures and poems of their own.
Questions you could ask your kids while reading:
- What text type is this book?
- What is the purpose of the punctuation?
- Can you sum up the story in 1-2 sentences?
- What is the meaning of the story?
Spelling: This term we will continue to follow the Jolly Phonics Spelling and Grammar Program. We will have a strong focus on diagraphs (spelling sounds made from two letters). We will continue looking at adjectives, nouns and verbs and introduce adverbs and compound words.
Questions you could ask you kids while reading
- Can you find an adjective on this page?
- What adjectives would you use to describe this noun?
- What verbs can you find on this page?
- What is another word for that noun/adjective/verb?
Maths
This Term, Level 1 teachers are excited to provide hands on and engaging activities in the classroom. Our focus in Number will be multiplication, division and fractions. With the warm weather we aim to teach some open-ended activities outside, using water to demonstrate concepts like capacity. We look forward to our students improving their problem-solving skills through open-ended lessons where they will enjoy the opportunity to collaborate with their classmates.

- visit the Kitchen Garden and plant seedlings.
- conduct a biodegradable experiment.
- learn about foods from different cultures and Bush Tucker.
- do some cooking and look at special foods we eat for times of celebration.
