Year 10's Explore Exotic Delights in English!

Shane Coady and Scott Fisher

As part of remote learning in Year 10 English, students have been studying short stories from the anthology "Growing Up Asian In Australia" edited by Alice Pung. Many stories highlight the importance of food in culture, so last week the Year 10 English teachers, Mr Fisher and Mr Coady decided to have a cooking competition as a break from writing.  This required students to follow a recipe to cook an exotic Asian meal or a standard Aussie favourite from scratch for their families. Students submitted recipes and photos of their edible delights. The standard of entries was so good that it was very difficult to choose, with dishes ranging from the safe but yummy butter chicken, to stir fries, sushi, a corned beef pie and big old bacon and egg sanga with cheese.  Congratulations to the following students for cooking so well that their efforts were rewarded with a prize of an India Spice and Condiments pack to be sent in the mail shortly.

Winners:

1st:  Jacob Hammond for an authentic looking curry, a balanced dish fit for an Indian Raja.

I know it’s not spicy and its not a curry but last night I made stuffed peppers for dinner.  We call it something different in Albanian, but I can’t spell that… I didn’t read a recipe because the way my family makes it is just a bit of this and a bit of that, but I’ll attach a recipe I found on the internet. This isn’t exactly an Albanian dish, but my grandma's made me this since I was a kid, she obviously makes it 100 times better though.

Mr Fisher’s Comments:

For me, all the entries look great. I feel a bit harsh judging as there seems to be a worthy effort across the board. Food also needs to be tasted, I’m sure. I am pleased to see our students coming up with interesting food and thinking about the presentation. It was also wonderful to think that curry has become such a part of the Australian diet after my dodgy introduction via curried sausages in the Seventies (no offence, Mum). To me, whether the students made Indian food or some Aussie classics, I am happy to see that they have thought about life for Tanveer and Daryl.

Jacob. An all round meal on one plate. Reminds me of going to Flora Indian just across the road from Flinders Street Station. I like the solids, the liquids, the garnish and the layout.

Rhiannon. I liked the creative choice here. It was surprising and unique. Well formed and well displayed.

Connor and Chloe. Look like great meals to share. Loved the garnish and the lighting.

Sienna. I like the fact that she created something from her own cultural background. She thought about the meaning behind food, one of the key learning intentions for me.

Caitlyn. The pie looks delicious. I am bit of a sucker for good, old fashioned corned beef. I have never had it in a pie so it seems quite original to me.
