Musical

Hot Mikado

Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th August saw the 2018 St Andrews Hot Mikado Musical sing with success! Crowds gathered and audiences were delighted with a spectacular display of talent and vibrant enthusiasm from our creative cast, musicians and behind the scenes students during the three shows.

As we have come to the end of another College Musical, I reflect on what it has taken to get here.

More and more I hear from people that the productions they were in at school have a lasting memory, as they express what a highlight they had been. Putting on our College Musical is no small task, as everyone involved would attest to! However, what a privilege it is for me to be part of making memories like this for our students.

I look at this beautiful group of people and I see a team, a team that have encouraged and supported each other through what has been such a rewarding experience.

To our parents/families - thank you for making it possible for these students to be part of this. For the juggling of schedules, supporting children through nerves and learning the show with them. We are grateful for all your support.

To our cast - we are immensely proud of you! We have loved helping you to discover who you are, what you can do and what it feels like to be part of a team of people working to put a show on together. For some of you, you had no idea how good you could be when we first started this and it has been a blessing to see you grow!

Being part of this Hot Mikado production with you has been an absolute joy for us staff. I hope you remember this show always, and look back on it as a highlight of your time at school. You, and this show, have been a highlight for me.

What a joy this St Andrews 2018 production, Hot Mikado, has been!

Right from the start, this group of young people added sunshine to my Tuesday afternoons as we rehearsed. They are dedicated, kind, talented and teachable. Many of this cast have leapt out into new frontiers with this show, taking on areas of performing they have never tried before. They have allowed us to hear their magnificent voices, be moved by their heartfelt acting, laugh at their impeccable comic timing and cheer with every successful box step and conga line.

The student inspired me with their positivity and their work ethic. In addition to that, I have been moved by their commitment to one another. I frequently walked past prayer circles, high fives, mentoring moments and shared laughter. What a beautiful experience of shared creativity and love. I am so blessed to have been a part of it.

From the youngest Year 5 to the tallest Year 12, I am so very proud of them all, and I say to each and every one: "The Japanese equivalent of Gee You're Swell!".

Kids learn a whole lot of confidence in presenting and performing to an audience. It’s also a really great memory for people to look back on at their school times. I know for a fact that this is definitely going to be one of my best memories from school!

You make so many new friends and join a part of a family. But you also get to learn about the stage work and see what it’s like to perform every night in a proper theatre.

Hannah Collis, Year 9

I was humbled and moved to thank God for St Andrews!

Being involved in a show like this taught me to face my doubts and that most negative things are just in my head - this show brought the best version out of me, which gave me the confidence to present myself on stage and around other people.

Katherine Hiew, Year 11

I am so glad my daughter is part of this wonderful school where every aspect of talent is appreciated. God values creativity, which the students can express through drama. Thank you again to all the teachers involved, you have really impacted my daughter’s life, not only in the lead up to the musical, but in all aspects of your school. I can feel the passion and calling of all teachers who are imparting in all students of this wonderful school.

We all became one big family  and we all worked so hard to make a brilliant show

Karis Chan, Year 5

Musicals are one of the highlights for my children's educational experience. Such a high standard of production.

My children have grown deeper friendships and are more aware of other students at school in other year levels. There has been a positive example set for them to be encouragers, team players, to look out for others’ needs as they do their best, aim high, be enthusiastic, passionate, thankful and committed. They have learnt a lot about what goes into making a show and that their hard work pays off and brings pleasure to others. They have been exposed to the gifts and talents that God has given to different children and how that works together like the body of Christ. They can rejoice in what each other has to offer. It has given them a community, unified with a common goal and they definitely feel the loss of it now the show is done. It has given them memories to share for the rest of their lives.

I have loved being able to make and grow friendships with people and to use my talents and abilities to make people smile and glorify God. You get to discover your talents like never before, you can achieve things you didn't think you were capable of, a massive confidence boost, new friends and are able to glorify God.

You feel proud of what you’ve done, whether it was an ensemble role or a lead role. You feel really satisfied when you perform, even though at first it is really nerve-wracking. You really get to feel appreciated by other people and begin to make lifelong friendships.

Roselyn Kho, Year 8

It was great to spend time with the Year 11/12 students, they were very friendly and encouraging to the younger kids.
