Junior School

A place I’d like to live

In week 4 the year 2s were set some homework wherein they had to write about a place they’d like to live in. There were many great ideas shared which included these two lovely responses.

Community at work in the Junior School

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend a conference where the focus was on relationships and community. It reminded me of how blessed we are at St Andrews to create opportunities for our students to work and play in community. I have the opportunity to teach STEM to the students in the Junior school and this involves group work. It can be a challenge to work together but the amazing benefits of learning to develop relationships in this way is invaluable.

I also get to be a soccer coach (under supervision form Mr Farmer) on a Tuesday after school. The team spirit and wonderful care for each other is another example of the way in which we at St Andrews do community.

Preps 100 Days Party

Last week, the Preps had a party to celebrate being at school for 100 days!

We thanked God for a wonderful beginning to our schooling at St Andrews. We celebrated by making party hats and fairy bread (using 100s and 1000s of course)!

We also enjoyed sharing (and counting!) rice crackers and savoury shapes. (Did you know there are 99 savoury shapes in one box?)

We tested our counting skills by counting many groups of 100 in our classroom and made posters with 100 squares.

It was a fantastic celebration! We’ll keep counting the days until we finish Prep and look forward with great anticipation to the next exciting journey into Year 1.

Year 4 Poems

The Year 4s have been learning to write different types of poetry such as Haiku, free verse, cinquain and Dylan Thomas Portraits.  Here are some of their beautiful poems:

A Haiku poem by Justin Lin:

Peace

All is calm today

A rainbow in the distance

No more fighting now

A Dylan Thomas Portrait by Annika Li:

Have you even seen a beautiful bride?

Long, white dress

Shining earrings

Glamourous hairdo

Fancy stilettos

A Dylan Thomas Portrait by Vicky Zhang:

Have you even tasted kimchi?

Mouth watering

Mind blowing

Lips stinging

Eyes dripping

A Cinquain poem by Julian Bernau:

Mum

Kind, friendly

Shop, cook, garden

She likes durian most

Mummy

A Cinquain by Gabriel Armanyous

Daniel

Fast, skilful

Run, dribble, score

Loves to play soccer

Junior Chess Competition

On Tuesday 21st of August, St Andrews entered a team into a Junior chess competition. For many of the students it was their first chess competition and all performed admirably. Congratulations to Paul Bernau who came third place amongst the Year 1 students and Zachary Lim who came in third amongst the Year 3 students. Both these students qualify for the state junior final.

Wednesday afternoon chess club

Congrats to our St Andrews Wednesday afternoon chess club students who received mid year awards - 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as well as most improved.

Thanks to Nick Speck and his team for doing a great job teaching the students.
