ICAS Medal Winner

Congratulations to Nathan Miao in Year 4 who is a medal winner in the ICAS Science Competition.

ICAS (UNSW Global Assessments) is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. ICAS is unique, being the most comprehensive generally available suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary school students.

Students with the top score in each subject in each year level are awarded a medal and certificate.

Last year over 980,000 entries were received but only 514 students from Australia and 100 students from New Zealand and the Pacific Region were awarded medals for their outstanding achievement.

Nathan will receive his award at an official ceremony later in the year. Congratulations to Nathan on this significant achievement!

Car Parking

Please be aware that the Food Star car parking will no longer be available from Monday 3rd September as demolition and construction works begin to take place at the site. There will be NO FURTHER ACCESS TO THE FOOD STAR CARPARK. Please keep this in mind with your travel to school and allow sufficient time to utilise the Drop Off Zone, or find alternate parking. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Science Week

From lab coats and chemicals to arthropods and microscopes Science Week(s) at St Andrews Christian College has seen our secondary students teaching our primary students about Science.

Science week has become 3 Science Weeks due to so many other activities in the school.

The junior students have been introduced to the Science Laboratory, used some new equipment, learned some scientific vocabulary and made some new big friends.

Special thanks to Mrs Hooi our Laboratory Technician for all of her extra work in helping to prepare for these lessons.

Sustainability Update

Last week, we attended a Professional Development Day, updating our College Sustainability Focus. This year we are working on the “Waste” module and are encouraged by the many positive changes happening at our College.

These include:

  • Compost bins being used in all classrooms with Yr 2s doing a fantastic job emptying the compost bins each day after lunch.
  • Red Cycle bags being used for “soft” plastic waste. This includes plastic wrap and all plastic and foil chip packets. These bags are emptied once a week by our Yr 6 students and then collected by Mrs Weldon to be recycled.
  • Yellow paper bins being used in each classroom and in the yard for all paper and card rubbish (and some mixed plastic recyclables).

We are in the process of re-introducing “Nude Food” Days where students will be encouraged to bring morning tea and lunches with NO RUBBISH. Our plan is to make EVERY WEDNESDAY A “NUDE FOOD” DAY in Term 4 but why not begin now!

Stay tuned for more exciting information!

Language Changes in 2019

I would like to advise you of some curriculum changes that will take place in 2019.

French -> Chinese

We will be phasing out French over the next few years and replace this with Chinese. Mrs Lynne Marks will be able to concentrate more in her role as Head of Library and build more programs for the Library. In 2019, Chinese will be taught in each year level (Prep to Year 12) with the exception of Year 8.

French will be taught in Years 8,9,10 in 2019.

Enrolment update

We have commenced our planning for 2019 and confirming places for new students to start in Term 1, 2019. Unless we have been advised, we are assuming that all current students will be returning to the College in 2019.

If a student is not returning to the College, in line with the enrolment policy, one term’s notice in writing is required. If the notice is not received on time, one term’s tuition fees in lieu of notice will be charged. This requirement is clearly noted in the enrolment Agreement and Declaration which all parents/guardians signed when their child(ren) was enrolled.

To assist with our planning we ask you to advise the College by Monday 8th October 2018 if a student is not returning to the College in 2019. The notice should be addressed to the College Registrar and can be sent via email to registrar@standrews.vic.edu.au  It will be helpful to receive this notice as soon as possible as it will allow us to offer any vacant places to students on our waiting lists.

If there are siblings of current students wanting to enrol at the College, it is important that parents submit an enrolment application at the commencement of the year prior to their planned entry. This allows the College to provide a priority place for siblings of current students.

Please do not hesitate to speak with the Registrar, Mrs Suzy Song (8847 8309) if you have any concerns regarding this information or if you need clarification in any way.
