CULTURAL Evening

The Junior Sub School would like to congratulate the Wellbeing team and all the students who participated in and attended the College’s first Multicultural Evening celebration. The event showcased an array of multicultural music and dance performances, games, activities and workshops. We were proud of all the students who presented their talents at the evening, particularly the Year 7 and 8 students who participated alongside the older students. Thank you to all Junior Sub School families who attended the Multicultural Evening to support our students. We hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did!

STICKS AND STONES

On 25 May 2016, all Year 7 students attended the “Sticks and Stones” production. It was an entertaining performance, which gave students strategies for dealing with inappropriate and aggressive behaviour and resolving conflict. The performance supported our school’s Anti-Bullying Policy - that bullying should not be tolerated in any way, shape or form.

"The performance was really effective and taught us to really stand up for ourselves in a positive way and ask for help. It made some of us think that there may be people out there in a bullying situation. We have become more comfortable with sharing our thoughts and feelings. It was a very emotional performance. "

High Resolves

Year 8 students participated in the second session of the High Resolves Leadership Program. This component discussed Collective Identity. They were enthusiastic in their involvement in discussions around The Global Community and Cultural Differences. Our SRC Senior Reps helped to lead and guide the groups and it was also a good experience for them to develop their leadership skills. Thanks to Ms Hocking for organising the SRC Leaders.

FORUMS

This term the Junior Sub School has participated in Year 7 and 8 Student Forums. Students had an opportunity to express their views and raise any concerns in relation to teaching and learning in the classroom, peer relationships and the effectiveness of support available to them. Coordinators were very impressed with the level of contribution and the openness of students to discuss issues.

NAPLAN

Year 7 students completed their NAPLAN testing this term. They were assessed using common national tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. NAPLAN results will be mailed out to families.

UPCOMING EVENTS

CYBERIA

Year 8 students will attend an Anti - bullying Program "Cyberia" in Performing Arts on Thursday 2nd of June. This program is an Educational theatre run by Brainstorm productions that addresses cyber bullying and aims to help improve student mental health and wellbeing.

STATE LIBRARY

We have been invited to attend the State Library for the "Research Launchpad" guided program. In this interactive student program, students will be taken on a tour of the State Library and be introduced to key collection items. Building upon their discoveries from the tour, students will practise valuable question generating techniques, collaboration and research skills. This is a very exciting opportunity for our students as they made such an impression with the State Library two years ago - they have invited us back! The Program is funded by a philanthropic organisation so admission and buses are free. Classes will start attending at the end of this term and continue over the next term.

REPORTS

Teachers are currently preparing for reports. If there are any concerns with your child’s progress the Coordinators will ring you. Please ensure that we have up to date contact details. Please support coordinators by encouraging your child to complete all homework and by submitting all assessment tasks by the due date.

ABSENCES

We require an attendance of 90% in order to pass subjects.

If your child is absent we require either a phone call or a note signed by the parent or guardian explaining the reason for the absence. The note needs to include your child’s name, their class, the date of the absence and reason for the absence. If your child has attended a doctor or dentist please ask for a medical certificate.

UNIFORM

With winter approaching please ensure your child has a jumper and or wet weather jacket. Only white or black scarves are permitted. Please don’t leave shoes outside overnight to get wet and your child’s name should be written on all articles of clothing. Hoodies, canvas shoes and coloured t-shirts underneath the uniform are not permitted.

CAMPS

Year 7 camps are complete! The camps program is an invaluable part of a student’s experience in the Junior Sub School. It teaches students skills that cannot be learned as effectively in the classroom environment. Students were able to build or strengthen relationships with their peers and experience being away from home. Students have learnt to make their breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as clean up after themselves. They have enjoyed participating in many activities such as swimming, night walks, visiting waterfalls, sheep shearing and the farm visits. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Mark Micallef, Camps Coordinator for managing the camps program and enabling all students to attend. Year 8 students can look forward to their camp program later in the year.
