VCE and Careers Expo 2016
Year 11 students attended the VCE and Careers Expo at the Caulfield Racecourse on Friday 6 May. The VCE and Careers Expo brings together exhibitors from major Australian tertiary institutions and providers of VCE and career resources and information. The Expo features over 190 exhibitors (including Digital Careers), seminars on VCE subjects, career and study advice. Students were excited to collect a range of information and resources including study guides, brochures from various institutions as well as a range of careers information. Thank you to the senior school team for their organisation of this worthwhile event and thanks also to all staff who accompanied the students on the day.
Education Week 15-21 May
Technology - create your future was the theme of Education Week this year. Each Learning Area showcased their programs through fun and engaging activities throughout the week. There was a strong emphasis on interactive activities such as quizzes, musical performances, art showcases, sport, as well as posters, book displays, games and digital technology. Experimenting with digital devices such as the Makey- Makey and virtual reality kits was certainly a highlight for students and staff alike.
We ended the week with a sumptuous morning tea for staff and presented a number of special certificates celebrating the long term contribution of a range of staff to education and to the school. Thank you to all our staff for organising and supervising a variety of interesting activities during the week.
Year 12 GAT
All students who are studying a VCE Unit 3-4 course will sit the General Achievement Test ( GAT) on Tuesday 7 June 2016 from10 am -1:15pm. (students must be at school 30 minutes before the exam is due to begin).
Believe it or not, in past years, the GAT has included questions on octopus necklaces, cartoons, number plates, mind-readers, ballet shoes, the toughness and bendability of common materials, lock mechanisms, maths puzzles, poetry, ventilation pumps, economic growth of countries, dissolving mixtures in different solutions and pop art. The basic point is for students to show their general ability to construct a piece of writing in response to stimulus material, interpret questions, reason and analyse data.
Students will already have done preparation for the GAT in the past study of subjects like English, Mathematics, Science and History, where they have built up general knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning.
We wish all students the best of luck with this test.
Goals Launch
Each year we are fortunate to have a group of Year 9 students participate in the Goals program. This program is overseen by the Australian Business and Community Network, and involves one on one mentoring with business people. This year we are supported by staff from Norton Rose Fullbright and Ernst & Young. The program is always very popular, more students apply than places available. The launch of the program was held on Friday 6th of May. From accounts it was very successful. Feedback from both the students and business people was overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to Ms Shona Cowell for her organisation of the program.
IDAHOT Day
May 17th was International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. Thanks to the Wellbeing Team led by Ms Nicole Thompson, ably supported by a group of students, for organising activities to highlight this day. Activities included the signing of a pledge to stand against homophobia and transphobia, the selling of fairy bread and lolly bags, and a photo booth.
Semester Tests and Exams
Year 10 and 11 exams commence on Thursday 26th May. Students are expected to school for all timetabled exams in full school uniform. No timetabled classes will run for the duration of the exam period. Students who are doing an acceleration Year 12 subject are expected to attend those classes as normal.
Year 9 Semester Tests will be held in the week beginning 30th May in all core subjects. Tests will be held during normal class time. Other classes will proceed as normal. Please contact the relevant sub school if you have any questions regarding exams or semester tests.
And finally.....
We wish our Year 9, 10 and 11 students all the very best for their exams over these two weeks, and the same to our Year 10’s who will participate in Work Experience after the holidays.
