Flying High

High Flyers Program
Four of our Year 10 students Mehak, Camilla, Stephanie and Ailsa were selected to be a part of the High Flyers Program. The program aims to show young women that interesting and fulfilling careers in aviation exist. We were welcomed by staff from Jetstar. There were quite a few schools from around Melbourne who attended the program. We were divided into four different groups and there was no one in the group from the same school as each other.
There were four activities- The tour, Engineering, Digital/IT and Pilot Training. We were given an insight into each of them and understood the different fields. The tour gave us an insight of how Cabin Crew are trained. We also participated in an activity that involved building a raft in case the plane landed in water. The engineering activity, taught us the many fields of engineering and most of them have little or no women in them. The Digital/IT department told us how the team works together. For example, a part of the team works on designing and another part of the team makes sure that when a flight is in the process of booking, they make sure that the money goes through and their flight is booked. The pilot part of the program taught us how the pilots calculate landing situations. For example, if the ground is wet the airplane will land at a greater distance and if it’s not the airplane will land at a shorter distance. Mehak was given a chance to visit a flight simulator, she also experienced what the inside of a pilot cabin looks like. She told us that there’s a power point that changes the screen to the desired condition on the platform or the clouds for training purposes.
The program gave us an insight of what it was like working at Jetstar. We had a chance to take the photos with the captains, the engineers and the crew. We also received a little goodie bag which was really nice of them.
A big Thank you to Ms Sinclair for organising our excursion and Ms Gokmen for taking us to the QANTAS training facility for the day.
