YEAR 7 GIRLS SUPER 8s CRICKET – STATE FINALS

Congratulations to our Year 7 Girls Super 8s cricket team who participated in the SSV State Finals on Tuesday 27 November. On the day the girls participated in three matches against Bairnsdale SC, Springside West SC, and traditional rivals Balwyn HS.

In the City v Country Derby in Round 1, the girls from Bairnsdale were too strong with the bat as they coasted to an easy victory. However, the girls bounced back smashing Springside West SC and Balwyn around the park to finish the day with two wins and 3rd place in the State.

Well done to all the girls in the team, and special credit to our team leaders Casandra Joseph and Aspen Lehmann

MCKINNON SPORTS LEADERSHIP AWARD

MSLA is an elective designed to give students a basic understanding of sports leadership and enable them to progress further in areas of leadership. This elective consists of both theory and practical elements and involves visits to local primary schools and assisting with Year 7 and 8 sport where we have the opportunity to test out our newly developed skills.

Before we start refereeing matches or run activities for the primary school kids, each student has to complete two online courses: Community Coaching General Principles and Community Officiating General Principles. Once completed we get the opportunity to coach and officiate. In the weeks leading up, my teacher Mr King gave demonstrations and ran example warm ups and skill drills. We learnt handy tips on how to control a group of kids, give instructions and how to efficiently organise teams.

After learning the skills of sports leadership, we took on the challenge of Year 8 sport, specifically, myself and Jordan assisted Mr Shaw and Mr Jhoomun with Boys Soccer for three consecutive Fridays. We both conducted warm ups and ran drills before refereeing the inter school matches. If we weren't coaching or officiating matches, we would be at Valkstone Primary School running fundamental motor skill activities for a Grade 1 class. This was a valuable experience and a great opportunity to grow our leadership skills.

Our major assessment task was to put together a short video of our time during MSLA, and reflect on how we went coaching and refereeing. This included what went well and what we can improve on. Overall MSLA was a very rewarding experience and grew my confidence in officiating and coaching. MSLA is ideal for students who are looking for a challenge and would like to improve their ability to organise, plan, prepare and become a leader in interesting and exciting activities.

YEAR 8 GIRLS TENNIS

On Thursday 22 November, the Year 8 Girls (as School Sport Victoria Regional Champions), set off to play in the State Finals against schools from across the state.  We were down to the last eight with our champion team of Joanna Lee, Georgia Foran, Surina Chakravorty, Lisa Liu and Sophie Willis.

Initially we had a slow start but we quickly found our rhythm. Against the first school in our pool - Mary MacKillop, Leongatha we had a hard time but then we confidently paved a path that would take us to the Semi-Finals by beating St Joseph’s Horsham and Heathmont. As pool winners we played University High School. It was a nail biting game in the Semi-Finals. We drew so close with them with even sets and even games. This meant we had to play a decider to determine whether we rose or fell. One game all ... two one down ... it was a fierce battle for the match, with determined looks of gladiators our warriors lost yet another game, resulting in puddles of tears on the green (synthetic grass). Now we had lost. There was nothing else to do but shake hands, hang heads and walk away contemplating our defeat. This time we lost and came 3rd in the State but ... “we’ll get ‘em next time for sure ….

Thank you to Mrs Hooper for her support and assistance from when we began in Term 1 through to our State Final in Term 4 and to the Assistant Coach Sam Bajracharya, who gave us great advice at training and at the Finals.

Go McK!
