Congratulations to Clare Wever (Year 10) who has been selected for The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program offered by Melbourne University’s Class of 2020.  Clare has been selected from over 1700 applicants across the State and has not only been chosen for her strong academic success but also her qualities in leadership, engagement and involvement within the school and broader community.

Clare is an exceptional student and we wish her all the best as she embarks on this exciting academic enrichment program.

VISIT BY SAUDI ARABIAN TEACHERS

On Tuesday 16 October McKinnon Secondary College hosted a delegation of four teachers from Saudi Arabia. The teachers participated in a Professional Learning Program with Monash University’s Faculty of Education and Bastow, the Professional Learning section of the Department.

A key aim of the program is to enable participants to gain first-hand experience of relevant Australian schools and educational approaches and to reflect on and make connections to issues in the Saudi Arabian educational context.

The delegation benefitted immensely from their time at McKinnon.

GREAT VICTORIAN BIKE RIDE

On Saturday 24 November we farewelled our Years 8, 9 and 10 students as they left for their two-week adventure on the Great Victorian Bike Ride. Many enduring friendships have been forged on the Great Vic Bike Ride over the years. We wish everyone a safe ride.

I would like to thank and acknowledge James McLaughlan and his team – Melissa Brush, Phillip DeSalvo, Daniel Farthing, Chelsea Han, Carole Hooper, David Machin, Lauren Mellios, James Van Pelt, Tiffany Zikou and Liam Adlington - for all they have done to avail students to this wonderful opportunity.

FRENCH EXCHANGE

The French Exchange heads off this week. I wish Ms Kellie Dickson and Ms Ludmila Antal and all the students the very best for a very successful trip. I look forward to hearing about the adventure on their return.

70 YEARS OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

2018 is an important year for the United Nations as, on 10 December, it is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is still considered the most significant document in the history of human rights, particularly as it set standards for achieving fundamental human rights for all peoples and all nations that are still in place today. The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948.
