Term One:

Visual Arts

Our children in Years 5 & 6 will be given more opportunities to experiment and create textural effects using different techniques, colour mixing, tonal effects and composition control. Our children are increasing their awareness of their environment and tend to exercise their ability to discriminate, question and formulate opinions about their work and the work of others. Therefore, they will be encouraged to extend and use past knowledge, understanding of materials used and skills acquired to create freely, extending their ideas, feelings and interpretations. Our children will be given the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively on projects and will present their work within and throughout the school. Learning tasks will involve our children in risk taking and problem solving to add to their development.

Physical Education

This term Year 5 and 6 children will be focusing on developing a positive attitude towards physical activities, sporting games and athletics. We will experiment with different techniques, leading to improved athletic performances. We will identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to target these areas. Our children will reflect and take control of their own learning in Physical Education and understand why we are learning certain techniques and ideas and participate in the athletics carnival at the end of February.

Performing Arts

The focus of Term 1 in Performing Arts is all about music.  Foundation through to Year 6 children will have the opportunity to explore all avenues in this exciting area.

Children in Years 5 and 6 will be exploring the idea of junk percussion.   We will be using every day objects, many of which would otherwise end up in the rubbish or recycling bin, to build our own instruments, experiment with sound, compose music and prepare for a performance.  During this unit children will be building on their knowledge of fundamental musical elements such as tone, tempo, dynamics and rhythm.

In our theory sessions, our children will be exposed to a range of different musical genres and will explore the ways that different styles of music can be used to provoke feelings, moods or interpretation of events.

Later in the year, all children will have the opportunity to participate in our whole school production.  During term 1 interested children from Year 5 and 6 will be invited to audition for the main roles in this performance.  Students from Years 1 to 6 will also have the opportunity to audition and participate in the school choir.

In Term One, we will investigate the traditions and customs of the Lunar New Year with a focus on the legends and celebrations. We will also develop a cultural understanding of the lives of people in the past, and the settlement of Chinese immigrants to Australia in the Gold Rush era. Our children will also explore the vocabularies of different occupations in Mandarin and practise talking and writing about the occupations of our community members.
