Literacy

Learning focus' in Literacy Term One
This term we are looking at the following:
Reading
-Selecting 'Just right' books, what this means and how choosing the 'right' book can help support your child's reading goals and progress.
-Stamina with sustained reading behaviours that help promote and encourage reading engagement and interest.
-Reading comprehension where children develop a deeper understanding of the texts they are reading and making connections with the text, characters and plot. This involves making predictions, inferences, summarising the text and building upon your child's existing vocabulary.
-Developing Book Club skills within the classroom by looking at set texts with group focus' and discussion.
Writing
-Writer's Notebook where children personalise their Writer's Notebook and write about topics they are interested in as well as compose stories and select writing genres they enjoy.
-Warm write sessions each fortnight where children focus on the creative aspects of writing and work on their writing skills in engaging sessions where they can chat beforehand with their families about ideas and experiences.
-Narrative genre structure and looking at characters, setting, description and adding detail when writing narrative stories.
-Instructional writing structure, language and sequencing with links to our Humanities topic.
-VCOP activities that will focus on the correct use of punctuation and give children a framework that can help them to monitor their development and self assess their work.
-Word study where each week the children will focus on a particular area such as adjectives, adverbs, nouns and pronouns.
Spelling
-We will look at a spelling rule each fortnight focusing on what the rule is, when we apply this rule and using the spelling rule with words.
