Junior School Learning

Foundation

Our Foundation Students have had a fantastic start to school and Mrs McHenry and Mrs Fletcher have enjoyed getting to know everyone.  This week all Foundation Students have been sent home with the following items;

  • A blue satchel – This will contain your child’s diary and take home reader.  Please assist your child in remembering to bring this to school every day.
  • A take home reader – your child will bring home a new reader each day they are attend school and then return and swap it the following day.
  • A diary – Used as a means of communication with your child’s home room teacher and to record books read at home.  Please record the title of all take home books read on the day they have read them (not in the reading log at the front of the diary).
  • Red bag of books - contains five children’s books for every Foundation student attending a Victorian Government school. These books are for families to keep and enjoy with their child at home.

Junior School Inquiry

This term we are learning about keeping ourselves healthy.  This week we looked at being Sun Smart and the students in 1/2 created a Sun Smart poster.

Year 1 and 2 Maths

This week in numeracy, student have been counting to and from 100 from different starting points. They have been using a hundreds chart to help them count and have been noticing patterns in the chart. Using the hundreds charts provides a framework for students to think about our base ten number system and is used often in the 1/2 classroom to support and develop number skills such as adding and skip counting.

Year 1 and 2 Reading

This week in reading, students have been learning to make connections to the texts they read. We have started looking at our mentor text for the week – The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch. Students analysed the cover of the book and made predictions about what they think may happen. Students also wrote and drew connections to the main character Elizabeth.

Year 1 and 2 Writing

Students have been learning how to write detailed and engaging recounts. This has allowed them to share their highlights from the recent school holidays and their weekends. It has been terrific to see students enthusiasm as they use their own experiences in their writing. Their effort has been fantastic.
