An indigenous perspective in early childhood education

Lyn Pewtress, ELC Coordinator

The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) places strong emphasis on the need for early childhood educators to build cultural competence. In the Australian context, a key component of this is acknowledging and responding to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and communities.

Our Kilvington ELC educators access and make use of educational resources and design programs which are inclusive of indigenous culture, and engage in learning experiences with indigenous members and environments to support our understanding.

This term, we welcome Karan Kent, an indigenous educator from Yimba Yumba, who will be visiting the ELC throughout the year to share her knowledge and culture with the children. Over the past week, Karan visited each group and displayed a range of Aboriginal artefacts and instruments, allowing the children to touch and explore each item.

In addition, the four-year-old groups next week will visit the Royal Botanical Gardens led by indigenous educators, exploring the outdoor environment based on the book ‘You and Me Murawee’.

The children have whole-heartedly embraced their learning, and will continue to respect and reflect on their understanding of Aboriginal people and their culture.
