From the Leadership Team

Jon Charlton, Principal

Welcome back to Term 2. I trust you had a relaxing and refreshing Easter break with your family and loved ones.

Acknowledgement of Chair

The Kilvington Constitution allows each board member to serve a maximum of three terms. So sadly this week, at the Kilvington AGM, we farewelled the Kilvington Board Chair, Professor Jayashri Kulkarni AM. After nine years of brilliant leadership of the School, we are indebted to Jayashri for her dynamic, astute, warm, dedicated and personable guidance at the helm.

The Board has been a very stable, strong and harmonious team under her leadership, and delivered outstanding governance of and support to the School. Jayashri’s contributions have always been enormously invaluable and central to the success of the School. She will be greatly missed.

New Chair

Gail Bergmann has been appointed as Kilvington’s new Chair of the Board. She was appointed to the Board in December 2012 and her expertise is in the field of governance, risk management and audit. Gail has been a Director of Risk Services at Deloitte, a Principal at Ernst & Young and is currently the Head of Risk and Audit at Cleanaway.

Our Deputy Chair is Sarah McSwiney. She has been on the Board since 2016 and is the Composites Technology Manager at Boeing Research and Technology Australia. Sarah has been with Boeing for 16 years and has held various engineering and management roles, both in Melbourne and Seattle. Sarah is also the Chair of industry body Aviation/Aerospace Australia, and is on the industry advisory boards for Aerospace Engineering at both Monash and RMIT Universities.

Our Treasurer is Richard Moore. He was appointed to the Board in April 2019 and his expertise is in the fields of finance, governance, commerce and strategy. Richard is currently the Chief Financial Officer of PEXA (Property Exchange Australia), responsible for all aspects of finance, compliance and risk management.

Camps

Our Senior School students spent their first day of term on campus before jumping on buses and heading off to their respective camps. Having missed out in 2020, it was so pleasing to see our students participate in our Outdoor Education Program. Camps are such a great experience for young people.

They learn new skills, develop important connections, stretch themselves physically and mentally, and of course, have fun. Our staff also gain a great deal from the opportunity to share experiences with students outside of the classroom. This all helps in strengthening relationships between students as well as between students and teachers.

Thank you to all our students for their participation, grit and resilience, and representing Kilvington in such a respectful manner. My thanks also go to the many staff who spent time away from their family to ensure that students had a positive experience away from home.

Students participated in a variety of activities and visited the following Victorian destinations:

  • Year 7 – Surfing – Lorne
  • Year 8 – Beach Art, Hiking, Surfing and Canoeing – Wilson’s Prom
  • Year 10 – Rafting, Hiking, High Ropes – Eildon Region
  • Year 11 (1) – Cycling – Bright and Beechworth
  • Year 11 (2) – Hiking and Abseiling – High Plains
  • Year 12 – Retreat, Study and Activities - Anglesea

New Steam Centre

As part of our progressive capital works program, we will commence our next exciting building project in mid to late 2021. On the current Library site, we will develop a three-level state-of-the-art STEAM Centre, where learning, innovation and entrepreneurship will be supported by contemporary spaces for science, robotics, systems engineering and media.

There will be casual and formal learning spaces and project collaboration areas. The School Library will also be rebuilt on the ground level.

You will have the opportunity, through a soon-to-be-launched fundraising appeal, to be part of this historic development . I look forward to sharing further information with you in the upcoming weeks.

Senior School Production - Matilda

Our Senior School Production of Matilda will be held in Dalton Hall on the 13, 14 and 15 May. I am delighted that following its postponement due to the pandemic last year,  students and staff have had the chance to work together on this much-loved story. I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.
