Technical Program
Technical Literacy | Technical Numeracy |
---|---|
Literacy incorporates the application of the four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening that is important for all areas in our life. | Numeracy involves applying mathematical skills and evaluating their use to solve problems in the world around us. |
Why do we teach it at TSC?
Not all students have the same literacy and numeracy strengths. This is because some students have gaps in their learning (for various reasons). These gaps make it difficult for students to readily learn the content required in Year 10 and subsequently in VCE or VCAL studies. Technical program will enable students to fill in these gaps, extend the current knowledge providing extension and work to improve their ability to apply literacy and numeracy skills to new concepts and problems in all curriculum areas.
Technical Literacy Term 1
In Tech Literacy this term we are focussing extensively on reading. Students will be taught reading strategies and given independent reading time to develop their reading skills. We request you to encourage your child to develop this habit at home by asking them about the book they are currently reading and recommending your favourite books.
Technical Numeracy Term 1
In Tech Numeracy this term, students will be focussing on their number skills and problem solving ability. Students have completed initial diagnostic testing to establish the skills that need to be targeted in their learning. They will now be working on these identified areas for improvement. Rapid recall of number facts, such as multiplication tables, is important for improving mathematical understanding. All students have been subscribed to Math Facts Pro (https://mathfactspro.com/games/), they will be given login details in class, and students can use this program at home to improve their rapid recall.
Each newsletter we will be providing information about the Technical Program, suggestions ways you can help your child at home and problem solving activities. If you have any questions or concerns about the program or your child’s literacy or numeracy skills, please contact us at school.
