Get set for summer holiday reading 

Summer holidays are nearly here! 

Don’t forget to stock up with your favourite reads or explore our fantastic new collection of books. The John Cain Library has many new fiction, non-fiction, biographies and graphic fiction titles for loan over the summer holidays. The library loan dates have now been extended until the 8th February 2021.

 

Over the holidays take advantage of our Wheelers eBook and audiobook collections wherever you are, once you have an internet connection.  We currently have 3,152 eBooks and 930 audiobook titles, all selected for a young adult audience.   For access to all print and electronic resources go online to the John Cain Library Webpage  and log in using your Compass ID and Compass password. There are ‘How to guides’ for using eBooks, Audiobooks and Clickview as well as renewing library books online.   

Overdue library books

With the end of the year fast approaching, could families please remind students with overdue library books to check their bags, lockers and bedrooms for library books. With our borrowing dates extended during remote learning this year, our student overdue books have climbed to approximately 500. In order to start 2021 anew, can students please ensure that they have returned their library books before the holidays so that other students can enjoy our fantastic resources. If your library books are damaged or lost, please let our friendly library staff know.

Melbourne Young Writers Studio 

The Story Intensive: A special event for teen writers 

A creative collaboration between Melbourne Young Writers’ Studio & Writers Victoria. 

Take a deep dive into story and equip yourself with the tools and knowledge required to bring your life into your story and your ideas to life. This two-day workshop will cover character development, world building, theme, structure and take a close look at the relationship between author and story; drawing on our own experiences to create meaningful and satisfying works of fiction. This is a wonderful opportunity for teen writers looking to expand their craft, meet like-minded creatives and be infused with first hand knowledge from industry professionals. 

Age: Teens between 14-18 years 

When: Tuesday 19th & Wednesday 20th January, 9:00am - 3:30pm 

Where: The Wheeler Centre 176 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne

A Simple Space 

Stunning and joyous for kids and adults alike, A Simple Space is stripped back circus at its very best. The performance is simultaneously raw, frantic and delicate, supported by driving live percussion as the acrobats are pushed to the limit, breaking down their usual guards and introducing the reality of failure and weakness.

Christmas Projections 

Melbourne’s famous Christmas projections return over three locations. Stroll along Swanston Street to see projections light up State Library Victoria, the Melbourne Town Hall and Princes Bridge.  There’s a special thank you to the Melbourne's COVID-19 heroes that will have you feeling all the emotions.

New Year Eve – District Docklands 

The District Docklands is the perfect place for the whole family to see in the new year.

Celebrate with live entertainment including roaming street performers, DJs playing your favourite tunes, mascot friends including Melbie Bear from Melbourne Star and the Carl’s Jr. Star.

Harry Potter and Cursed Child – starting 17 January 2021 (124 shows) 

The Princess Theatre has been transformed to immerse you in this spectacular world where epic duels, extraordinary spells and beloved characters come to life. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the most awarded production in the history of Britain's Olivier Awards, winning a record-breaking nine awards including Best New Play and Best Director. Following its New York opening in April 2018, the play won six Tony Awards on Broadway, including best play.

The Princess Theatre is the Australian home to Harry Potter and The Cursed Child – Parts One and Two, which is exclusively playing in Melbourne.
