Careers News

Welcome back to all students and families

Welcome to the first Careers newsletter.  The newsletter contains some of the most important careers information each fortnight.  Remember that many careers opportunities, and lots more information, can still be found on the myNorthcoteHigh careers page, until we move to Microsoft Teams later this term.

Congratulations to the class of 2020, who pushed through all the challenges and have achieved outstanding transition outcomes across the board.  It’s been a real privilege to work with them on their journey, and to see our school leavers moving so confidently into the next phase and challenge. Despite our large student numbers, transition always reminds me that EVERY student is own their own individual pathway and career journey.

In 2021 we will see all students from Years 7-12 completing their Career Action Plan through My Career Portfolio.  It’s so important that students take time to reflect on how they are managing their journey – their strengths, the areas they wish to focus on, and some short term goals. It is through processes such as this that students will identify pathways to lead them towards longer term goals, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves along the way. Our students need to build skills to manage their career and learning over their lifetime.

I look forward to working with students, teachers and families this year, and hope that together we can continue to prepare young people to step into their career journey with vision and confidence.

Year 10 Work Experience

This week we are launching the Year 10 work experience program, to provide students with an opportunity to spend a week in the workplace from 17 - 21 May.

Arranging Work Experience will be the focus in Connect classes this term, as well as completing the Occupational Health and Safety certifications.  The first deadline to secure your placement, and complete the arrangement form – including getting it signed by your employer – is the end of term one. The reason for this is to not only allow time for all the paperwork to be processed and sent to employers, but also to give students the best chance of finding a placement of their choice.

My Northcote High has a plethora of information to guide and assist students through the process of finding a placement, and completing the paperwork.  Simply go to Careers and click on the Work Experience tab!!

Australian National University (ANU) launched the Tuckwell Scholarship Program in 2013.  The Tuckwell Scholarship Program at the ANU is the most transformational undergraduate scholarship program in Australia.  A Tuckwell is not just about a students’ intellect.  It is also about their desire and determination to use their natural abilities to realise their full potential so that they can make a difference in the world.

Tuckwell Scholar students will receive:

  • $22,200 per annum (2020 rate) (increasing with inflation) for each year of their degree, for up to five years, to cover on-campus residential costs, books, and general living expenses
  • priority access guaranteed to ANU-approved student accommodation
  • an annual allowance of up to $2,000 to assist with their move to Canberra and to support two annual return journeys (e.g., airfares) between their home and the University for each year of their degree.  The allowance will be dependent on the proximity of their family home to ANU.
  • a domestic economy return airfare, or other transport costs, for their parents to visit at the start of the program, and
  • an ANU Fitness Centre membership for the length of their degree.

Scholarships are awarded based on four criteria:

Find out more at UCAT.

Tax File Number (TFN)

Any student will need at tax file number if they start work (part-time and full-time) and all students planning on a tertiary education require one when they start. Importantly, current Year 12 students are reminded that they cannot enrol in a CSP (Commonwealth Support Place) course at university without a Tax File Number, so it is worthwhile getting an application submitted early!  Students must apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office.  To apply and also to find out about participating Post Offices, visit TFN Application
