Deputy Principal - Teaching and Learning

Dr Janine Biggin

I take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to the 2021 school year.  We are very hopeful of no interruptions to our learning programs this year.

I commend the students on the good start they have made to the year, especially the commitment to a new year level and new subjects.

VCE and VCAL 2021

At the assembly to begin the year that was held with our Year 12 students, it was made very clear to students that satisfactory completion of their units requires a commitment to all set work.  Classwork and homework are assessed by teachers to make decisions about satisfactory completion.  School Assessed Coursework (SACs) are undertaken by students to gain a score for the purpose of attaining a study score.  It is very important that all students equally commit to all set tasks throughout the year.  At the College, we will support the effort of students with supervised study when they are not in class.

The College also has a 90% attendance rate as our expectation for VCE units and VCAL programs.  Falling below this level of attendance can place satisfactory completion at risk.  For VCAL students, they must ensure they attend their VET course as gaining these certificates is related to hours.  Not completing the required hours of a VET study can impact on the successfully attainment of a VCAL certificate.

Tutoring Program

The College has received funding to undertake a tutoring program throughout 2021.  This tutoring program is to support the students in terms of filling in any gaps that may exist due to online learning in 2020.  We have three staff who will deliver the tutoring program.  For Numeracy, Mr David Fong and Miss Shantelle Wills will be our tutors.  I welcome back Sheila Mallia, who will be our tutor for Literacy.

The tutors are going to be going into classes over the next few weeks to support teachers.  During this time, we are finalising small groups to be supported during school hours.  Students from all year levels will be involved in the tutoring program.

Curriculum Design for 2022

This year, as we watch the new STEM building being constructed, our key work will be to complete our writing of units of study for years 7 and 8 for 2022.  It is an exciting time as we look to continue to deliver high quality junior learning programs, which will be supported through some wonderful new learning spaces.

I wish both our staff and students well as we begin our 2021 learning journey.
