National Science Week

National Science Week is here!

This week is National Science week. We celebrated with special themed science lessons in STEAM as well as a whole school virtual incursion on Friday Morning.

This year's theme is Glass: More than meets the eye. We looked at the the chemical properties of glass linked to what the students are learning in STEAM this term.

F/1: Students have been looking at sound as well as the properties of different materials. This week we looked at Glass Xylophones and noticed the different sounds glass can make.

2/3: Students have been experimenting with properties of different materials. This week we explored how these properties can change with temperature changes. We applied this knowledge to show how glass art is made by making our own sugar glass art.

4/5/6: Students have been learning to code and understand hardware and software involved in computer systems. Students explored how glass is used in fibre optics and the transmission of data. They then had a go at making their own "optic fibres"  using hot glue guns.

This morning, the whole school enjoyed a virtual incursion provided by Street Science. They had lots of fun looking at glass in an exciting, engaging way.

Below is a description of the concepts covered in the show

Reminder: If you and your family are interested in getting involved in Science Week at home, check out the National Science Week website. We hope you have as much fun as we did this week celebrating how amazing science is.
