Year 5/6 News 

Welcome

Wominjeka everyone,

This fortnight in 5/6 we have been busy in all areas of our learning! Here's a snapshot of what we've been doing in Reading, Maths and PBL.

Reading

The first weeks of term have been spent assessing the students progress and allocating them to different Guided Reading groups. This week we are now in our new groups introducing new texts and discussing the main learning points from the book. 

PBL

As we move through this term the students are starting to engage in their businesses that were established earlier in the year. Each student has joined one of the three businesses of Community Garden, Sweet Treats or Cafe. 

Each business now has a structure and are essentially being run by the students. The aim is to have each business up and running by next term. 

This business unit is being run alongside our current Design technology topic of, 'What is the environmental impact of the food choices we make?' The obvious links between the two different aspects of PBL  will be drawn out as we progress through the term.

Mathematics

As part of our self-directed model in Mathematics, students will be reviewing their assessment pieces and moving towards selecting their own goals and allocating themselves to Mathematics clinics. Students will also be provided with opportunities to allocate themselves to revision clinics. 

We encourage you to have a conversation with your child about their learning goals and what they are practicing in their Practice Skills Tasks (PSTs). These can also be found on our Google Classroom page. 

A friendly reminder, that all students have access to Essential Assessment from home where they are able to log into 'My Numeracy' and 'Sunset Maths' to complete tasks based ont their current assessment task. This provides a wonderful opportunity for students to revise skills and practise their automatic recall of numbers.
