Year 3

The year 3 team love to spill the tea on what's going on in our cohort, read below to find out the juicy information of what our glorious students are doing at school.

Reading and Writing:

As term 4 is nearing to the end, Year 3 students have wrapped up their Reading and Writing poetry unit. We were able to use various comprehension skills such as inferring, critiquing and analysing to unpack various poems. Students practiced identifying figurative language and analysed its purpose in texts. We then translated these learnings into our writing where students created an anthology of poems such as Diamantes, Quatrains, Limericks, Haikus and more! We’re finishing up the term with a Toy Story 4 film study in which the fantasy elements and compelling storytelling will support students in writing their fantasy narratives! Check out all our awesome work on Seesaw!

Maths:

The year 3 students have been working hard throughout the Operations unit. This past week, they have explored how to write matching equations to worded problems and then use their most favoured strategy to find out the answer. Students in Statistics and Probability have been inventing a new ice cream flavour for the school. They have created a tally, tabled up the results and created bar graphs to match the data. The students created some interesting and unique flavours for the Brookside Ice-Creamery.

See some of their awesome work below.

Humanities:

So far this Term, we have looked at the Digital Technology aspect of Humanities and the students have been working hard to plan and create a scene from a story they have created. The setting is a bedroom and the students have been creating a stop motion video that will be shared via Seesaw in the next few weeks. The students have loved using this application to create their scene. The students have been working hard and the final products are super creative.

Here are a few quotes from them so far:

“So far this term I have enjoyed making the set, it was really fun“ Mischa 3A

“I liked making my set, it was fun to plan what it was going to look like and see what the final outcome was” Alexa 3A

“I enjoyed making the movie scene, I loved watching my animation come to life” Nathan 3A

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

Wow, what a year!

The year 4 students have been busy this term preparing for their first ever school camp. We had trivia with other classes, learnt about other’s nationalities and learnt new skills.

Literacy:

In Literacy this term we learnt about Sci-Fi, poetry and fantasy. In Poetry, we learnt how to write different types of poems like odes, haikus, acrostic and narrative poems. We also wrote a science-fiction story and learnt about different genres. In Fantasy we wrote stories and used the authors craft to make our stories even better.

Maths:

In Maths we have been learning about data. We collected information about the cars in Caroline Springs and made graphs using excel. We also learnt about money and finance where we made financial plans. We learnt how to budget using the school canteen list to purchase school lunches. This also helped us with calculating decimals.

Camp:

At camp we learnt how important it is to stretch ourselves past our limits. We were able to succeed in tasks we thought were not possible. The rain did not stop us from having loads of fun. We were able to climb ladders and trees to the high wire and giant swing, learn how to put a harness on, with the help of our teachers, and get as muddy as we wanted to through the mud run challenge.

Humanities:

In Humanities we learnt about Stop Motion. First we wrote a story and then created a plan to perform one of the main events. We set the scene and made props for the setting. We needed to take loads of photos to turn them into a video. The last step was to add sound effects which was lots of fun.

Year 5

This term we have just started to learn about patterns with decimals and how to add and subtract them. We have also started to do summarising in reading and looking at non-fiction texts.

We will be watching ‘The Emperor’s New Groove’ in reading to study the film as a class. Over the last couple of weeks we have started to write our own short stories about lots of different topics. In PBL, we have been looking at business, economics, needs and services. Now we are going to make our own need or service with a partner.

We have all looked at food labels in health to see what food is healthy and what food is unhealthy. Last but not least, in Science we have been looking at light, how we see it and how it helps as in our lives. And very soon we are going to Luna park and we are all so happy and excited to be going at the end of the year.

Kind regards,
