Reconciliation Week celebrations
Reflections from Yiramalay students
Last term, from May 27 - June 3 we celebrated Reconciliation Week. The theme for 2021 was More than a word, Reconciliation Takes Action. To me, this means an opportunity to get to know the Melbourne kids, mentors and teachers better.
During the week we designed footy jumpers, watched movies, videos and looked at posters around social media. I saw posters, social media posts and Mabo the movie. This tells the story of a man who fought for his native title and land rights.
Renae spoke to us about Reconciliation Week and the other students and I talked about making a special dinner, painting murals and going out on country for a day trip. We went swimming at the nearby Quarry, it was cold and enjoyable. I felt excited to share my Reconciliation experience with the Melbourne kids and their mentors and teachers.
