Middle School News

A lot has happened in the Middle Cchool cohort during semester 1 of 2021. As we are slowly recovering from the challenges of last year, year 9s and 10s have had many great experiences  while settling back into physical school life.

Peer Support / Year 7 camp

This semester, year 10s were involved in helping the year 7s to settle into their first year of high school. Through the peer support program, selected students were given the opportunity to bond with and become role models for the newest members of our school. We ran fun activities for groups of year 7s, with the aim of helping them to make connections with their peers and long-lasting friendships. As a part of this program, the year 10 peer support leaders had the privilege of going on year 7 camp, with the responsibility of coordinating and running activities, as well as providing lots of fun and laughter!

Sports

This semester, sport at MGSC has been a highlight for students. For the first time in two years, the Athletics Carnival was able to be run for the whole school. We had great weather for the day and many students had fun participating in their chosen sports, earning points for their houses and some even getting through to further rounds, representing our school. There were many events including hurdles, shot put, relay races, and novelty games which participants thoroughly enjoyed. Those who watched from the sidelines also had a great time cheering for their houses with friends.

Cross country also went ahead this semester for year 9 and those who chose to participate in year 10. House points were given out for participation and placing, and many students managed to make it through to districts.

In term one, the annual Swimming Carnival was held. Students dressed in their house colours and showed house spirit during events such as chants, diving and races. Although the weather wasn’t as warm as we hoped, many students maintained high spirits and joined in with their friends to win points for their houses. Others chose to watch and cheer on their peers from the side of the pool. We hope that students will continue to show house spirit throughout the year through acts of kindness and resilience so that we can improve the positive energy at MGSC even more!

Lockdown

Obviously everyone was hoping that we would never have to go through what we did last year but unfortunately not everything goes the way we want it to go. The year 9s and 10s still kept their heads up high doing their best during these difficult times. If anyone is ever having problems with their school work, stress or mental health remember that we have wellbeing counsellors here to help you. That goes for anything through the year in general. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Social

This semester the Middle School Captains (Candi and Georgie) along with ten other year 10 students will be organising the social. While we do not have anything set in stone, as COVID restrictions may vary, we are very excited to start planning a fun night for our year level. We are hoping to hold it some time in term 3.
