Year 10 Science

For the next couple of weeks the year 10s will be focusing on our solar system and the universe. Our class learnt about the scale of our solar system. Ms Leong set up a fun activity for us to understand just how enormous it really is.

As a class we scaled the sun down to the size of a two dollar coin, discovering that if we lay more than 67 billion coins in a row, it would equal the Sun’s diameter. Even though it was Science we did have to use some of our Maths skills to find out how far each planet would be if they were also decreased to this scale. Unfortunately, it was raining outside, but of course to understand this concept we must visualise it, so out we went.

Starting at Georgie, who was portraying the $2 sun, the line went for a total of 67 meters to Ellie, who was Neptune and felt like a “drowned rat” after the activity. It was a really interesting and fun activity to participate in as well as learn to understand the scale of our solar system. We can’t wait for future lessons
