There's always music
Year 8 Music
Students have been busy composing their own songs in a Rap style. Having looked into the history and development of the style of music and some of the key features, students were then asked to explore topics of importance or interest to them personally giving students an opportunity to exercise their voice in the classroom. Beginning with brainstorming words and phrases and developing a theme, story or some direction, lyrics begin to take shape.
This is just one example of lyrics about an issue that is important to many of our students, written by Sadie Wilson from 8H.
Theme: Gender Equality
Welcome to my kingdom, you're wearing my crown.
it’s like your chateau but it didn’t burn down.
Let me immediately remind you why you're here
because of a long line of women that should be feared.
You seemed to be drowning in your own misogyny.
What the heck happened to the fairy tale of equality?
I’m sorry for nagging you for my personal rights,
but I’m going to continue not just out of spite.
Chorus
I demand for my safety,
I demand for a life.
I demand to feel comfortable walking at night.
I demand for rights.
I demand for equality.
I demand that I get paid the same as my male employee.
This is a fight that should have already been fought.
I’m disappointed this matter even has to be in my thoughts.
I’m now 13 and have to worry
About always saying sorry
Let’s take a pause ‘cause I have nothing to apologize for
I want women’s rights more, more, more
