Reader's and Writer's Week
We have had a wonderful time celebrating our readers and writers, and the world of literature in the iCentre this week. The theme for our celebration is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. This is in line with the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s nationwide theme for 2021. Meeting this brief, the iCentre has been transformed into the worlds of outer space, fairy tales, Narnia, under the ocean, and steam punk - and it looks amazing.
We have three key events to celebrate the week:
Read Like a Girl with your Dad
Having read the book, A song only I can hear, students and dads who purchased tickets to our RLaG with your Dad event were treated to a wonderful evening on Tuesday. After some pizza, author Barry Jonsberg entertained us with stories of being a writer, working with publishers, the experience of having a book made into a film, and the important themes covered in his stories. Barry was warm and funny, and very interesting. It really was a terrific night.
The Reader’s & Writer’s Party
As the name suggests, this event has games, music, competitions, party food, and CAKE. Attendance requires a book-themed costume, and each year this party is a lot of fun. This year was no exception. There was music, limbo, loads of photos, and prizes. Some students went to a great effort with their costumes, and the atmosphere was high spirited and exciting.
The Principal’s Reading Challenge Launch
On Friday we launch the Principal’s Reading Challenge. This is a hotly contested inter-house reading challenge that takes place over four weeks. Homerooms submit their combined reading minutes each week. At the culmination of the challenge, the winning Home Room is rewarded with a pizza lunch.
As well as these key events, students have been able to win prizes each day by participating in the Reading Trivia Challenge via the Student Notices. This has proved to be very popular and hotly contested. Some students have even set alarms to be the early bird who puts their answer in first.
Reading and writing are two endeavours that are worth celebrating and we’ve had a lot of fun doing so.
