2019 Maths Talent Quest Winner

The Maths Talent Quest is organised by the Mathematical Association of Victoria and is open to all primary and secondary students. The competition aims to promote interest in and increase awareness of mathematics amongst students, teachers and parents. Students are encouraged to use their imagination and look at real life situations to find the mathematics within.

This year Zac Palatsides and William Wong, two of the boys who represented Glen Eira College at the All Schools 4 x 100 m relay, took their passion for athletics into their Maths Talent Quest entry called Sprinting with Mathematics.

They investigated how the 2018 GEC U13 Boys Relay Team could have changed their time if the baton was changed at different points in the change box and if runners 1 & 3 ran on the inside or the outside of the bend. The boys found that in an amateur race, this could make a difference of over half a second.

The boys also found that Usain Bolt could have lowered his 2009 world record time of 9.58 to 9.18 seconds by improving his reaction time, reducing his weight by 1 kg and benefiting from the highest legal tailwind speed. (Unfortunately Usain didn’t get the memo about his weight).

Zac and Will were awarded a High Distinction in the competition and received their award at a ceremony at La Trobe University on Thursday 17th October. Along with their certificate Zac and Will received a $50 prize voucher. Congratulations Zac and Will.

Homestay Hosts Meeting

On 23rd October  half of our homestay hosts attended our 1st homestay host meeting. We  went through the GEC Child Safety Code of Conduct and presented some pictures of nice food and a welcome basket taken by the students.

The hosts shared their experiences of hosting international students and expressed their expectations to their host students.  It was a good chance for hosts to communicate with each other as well.
