From the Classroom

Art

During Art classes this term, Foundation students have been discussing Henri Rousseau’s jungle scenes. They looked at the colour variations within leaves and created their own large scale leaf using oil pastels.

Students in Grades 1 and 2 have completed artwork based on discussions of William Turner’s seascapes. They will also revisit Henri Rousseau’s paintings and produce a jungle landscape.

The Grade 3 students discussed the landscapes of Paul Gauguin with the emphasis on foreground, middle-ground and background. They are enjoying using his artwork as inspiration for their own painting of a landscape.

The Grade 4 class discussed Picasso’s artist style and are now creating two-dimensional artworks using soft pastel. Later in the term, they will explore drawing and painting techniques inspired by John Olsen.

Students in Grade 5/6 have been studying colour. They have explored blending harmonious colours and the dramatic effect of using complementary colours (colours opposite each other on the colour wheel). The students also researched images as inspiration for designing their own two-dimensional mask, using soft-pastel. These will be the basis for the production of three-dimensional masks in future Art classes.

Foundation

Our return to school was fluent, easy and uninterrupted learning continued in the Foundation room.  Congratulations to returning all that was sent home.  I was so impressed with some of the completed learning that was included in the pack.  This week we have practised opening up the iPads into the Google Meet and Classroom for future Lockdowns.  We do have to be prepared at very short notice so hopefully this will increase their independence in working with these apps.  As following with guidelines, please remember masks are to be worn when entering the school classroom/grounds during school time.  Many many thanks for your support with all that has happened in the past week!  I did enjoy my phone call Parent Teacher Interviews. It is always lovely to celebrate and “brag” about how far the children have academically, socially and emotionally developed in our very first semester of school.

Grade 5/6 Writing

Our recent writing has focused on writing Information Reports in the form of biographies. We wrote biographies about people at school as well as Olympians and Paralympians. We will now write our autobiographies.
