PDHPE & Sport
PE and the outdoors are synonymous. Unfortunately, the move to online learning meant that students and staff were unable to spend as much time outdoors as we would have liked. Despite the challenges that online learning during a lockdown presented, our students took the opportunities available and came up with creative ways to get in their daily exercise. We were able to seek inspiration from our Olympian and Paralympian champions to stay motivated, keep active and pursue new goals.

Throughout Term 3, our students participated in a variety of aerobic, strength and skill based activities. PASS students in Mr Wright’s class have been working on their cardio in a couch to 5km challenge. Students in Mr Mellish’s class have been focusing on their strength and muscular endurance by creating body weight and home workouts. Students in Miss Ridley’s and Mr Hoole’s classes have been working through a weekly 300 – point challenge choosing new activities each week.

The teachers in the PDHPE faculty love to talk about the benefits of keeping active. During this challenging term, these benefits cannot be emphasised enough. It has been rewarding to see our students focus on their physical, mental and social health by taking the opportunity to get outdoors and be active. I’m sure there are many pets who have also enjoyed an increase in their daily walks too.

Within our theory lessons, we have been amazed at the commitment of our students. Despite the obvious challenges that online learning brings, students have engaged with live lessons and continue to produce work at a high standard. Year 7 have been completing a unit on relationships (timely, given the challenges of maintaining social connections whilst online) and Year 8 have been learning about power and respect. Year 9 have been analysing how health messaging is portrayed through the media while Year 10 have been exploring the risks and challenges facing adolescents including driving, partying, drugs & alcohol.

The engagement of our senior students also needs to be acknowledged. Despite the challenges, the students have done an outstanding job staying motivated and focused. They have continued to build upon their knowledge of the course content and build the skills needed in senior schooling. With the diligence displayed by our Year 12 students, we are confident they have given themselves every chance of success in their upcoming HSC exams. Our Year 11 students have laid the foundations and are now ready to commence their HSC year with every opportunity for success.

Finally, we would like to thank the families of our students. We understand and acknowledge the incredible challenges of online learning and appreciate the support that you have given us and your children. It does ‘take a village to raise a child’ and we are fortunate to belong to such a strong learning community.
