Co-curricular Report

Over the last month the students and staff involved in the co-curricular program have demonstrated great flexibility. Two snap lockdowns have certainly tested the logistics behind our cocurricular program.

In sport we went from a whole round of all sports locally, including playing against Scots All Saints & St Stanislaus' College in an old style WAS competition, to a week of remote learning. We then managed to return to school and field our winter sport teams, without the boarders, in a true test of school spirit. Many students played multiple games to cover the missing boarders and ensure the impacts on our community sport were minimal.

Music have been able to continue with the musical ensembles and have been working towards the local Eisteddfod. Unfortunately, this has been cancelled but again in a true test of school spirit the music ensembles have re-adjusted their focus and are now hoping to perform these pieces of music in front of our Year 12 students at Speech Day.

Cadets have also experienced an unusual start to the term. Normally the start of Term 3 is when the Cadet Unit welcome in the new Year 7 cohort and induct the leaders for the upcoming year. Due to restrictions this has had a different look but has happened over the last few weeks. Congratulations to the incoming SUO, Ella Worsley and the 2IC’s of Sophie Mahlo and Ben Chai. We look forward to the return of the normal program as the Cadet leaders prepare our new Year 7 students for their first camp experience at the end of Term 4.

Hopefully the local community can get this latest outbreak under control and we can get back to the full and diverse program that is offered here at school. Stay safe.

Netball

KWS Maroon and KWS Lilac

On Saturday 14 August the 15’s KWS Maroon and KWS Lilac teams went up against each other in what would be a fun filled (yet competitive) match. Each team put in 100% effort, with effective passing and some impressive shots at the goal on both sides. Shooting superstars of the game included Hannah Bennett, Maggie Anderson and Alice Wilson on the KWS Maroon side who managed a total of 32 goals, gaining possession of the ball through the excellent attack and defense strategies of their team. KWS Lilac also had some shooting superstars including Scarlett Mackenzie, Georgia McIntosh and Audrey Hedley who boosted their teams total of ten goals. While KWS Maroon ended the game with a win both teams ended the game having demonstrated excellent sportsmanship.

KWS Junior A V OHS Fusion

The KWS Junior A started steady with Zoe Bird taking plenty if intercepts in WD. Defensively the girls played outstandingly well and Emily Turner and Tessa Lawson converted a large number of girls to take the lead after the first quarter by two goals. Mia Reynolds and Emily Turner continued to shoot well throughout the second quarter, which kept the team leading by two goals. Centre-court players Xanthe Staniforth and Grace Sipson continued to consistently feed the ball into the attacking end which ensured the team went into the last quarter leading by five goals. Jorja Taberner, Halle Doyle and Scartlett Gee did an outstanding job in defence in the last quarter to ensure KWS Junior won 47 to OHS 30 goals. It was a fantastic win by the goals to ensure they are placed 3rd on the ladder and ensure that they make the finals.

KWS V OHS Firebirds

KWS White were keen to ensure that they played their rematch with OHS Firebirds on Saturday 14 August despite some key players being out of play with COVID restrictions. Almost all the girls stepped up to play four quarters, sometimes out of their usual positions, to have a very convincing win against OHS with a final score of 36-17. Hattie, Charlize and Kitty were strong on our attack side with great communication and coordination on the court. Daisy, Joanne and Annie presented a consistent and effective defence throughout the game – sticking to their opponents like glue and intercepting passes to gain control of the game on a number of occasions. Our thanks to Lucy and Jayde who stepped in to play with us and helped us avoid a forfeit. Well done girls on a strong finish a few hours ahead of the current lockdown!

KWS Phoenix v Redbacks

In what seems to be their last game of the season, the KWS Phoenix played the top team in the competition, the Redbacks. The girls played valiantly, as they have all year. The fact that we lost really doesn’t convey the importance of the season for the girls. This was a division with a lot of mature teams who possessed a lot of mature netballing skills and, all throughout the autumn and winter, our girls had to play out of their skins to be competitive on the court…but competitive they were! This fine team has become even better for the challenges it has faced and in the next two years I’m sure it will be winning competitions!

KWS 3rds v Life Studio

The KWS 3rds had a wonderful game against Life Studio on Saturday. Prior to the beginning of the game, an announcement came through the loudspeakers at Orange Netball indicating that a lockdown would begin at 5pm that afternoon and our game was due to begin at 2:30pm. The girls all rose to the challenge of this being potentially the last game of the season and gave everything they had on the court. A very special mention must go to the two Year 12 students in our team, Lizzy Kwa and Emma Choi who were both able to shake off their feelings of unease to deliver a majestic performance in the centre court for KWS 3rds. Despite narrowly missing out on a win, our team played exceptionally well with all girls working together to deliver an outstanding performance. They have been an absolute delight to coach this year and I hope we may be able to take to the court again for the finals.

Rugby

Opens Rugby

Due to the everchanging COVID-19 conditions the Opens rugby squad were fortunate enough to have an internal game on the weekend. The game was played with great enthusiasm and both the Year 11 and Year 12 players had plenty of opportunities to assert their dominance. There was plenty of running rugby and big hits in defence. For the Year 12 students it was great that they could play their last game on KWS soil. It was not the way we imagined the season finishing but as the KWS coaches reinforced to the players, that “we hope their best rugby days are ahead of them and the friendships forged at KWS will never be forgotten”.

U16

The 16’s played in the first ever – as far as I know – Under 16’s Wolaroi v Weymouth rugby match. Day students and Under 15 were drafted by the respective houses. What followed was an intense battle, as momentum ebbed and flowed. Weymouth led 15-14 until the final play, where Wolaroi scored, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Unusually, and slightly controversially, the referee, Mr Trent Dyer, took the conversion, which he duly missed, meaning Wolaroi won the match 19-15. A huge thank you to the Under 15 boys who backed up. We look forward to coaching you next year.

U15

With some late scratching from the 15’s teams list, Saturday’s rugby game had opened up some opportunities for player to play in positions they have been seeking all season.

The teams were broken into an equal match and the game showed a highly contested and strong pace.

Some player had a bit of fear of the referee after some shenanigan’s by some of the payers, with the pre game referee talk identifying that any card would be a red.

The game ended evenly with only a converted try separating them.

Some highlights were Elijah playing at the key first five position and some strong running with Jamie Anderson. As always Harry Hazelton showed some tough spirt around the ruck. Sam Fabar continued his direction around the ruck and fed some clean ball around the park.

A great game and hopefully not the last of the season!

U14

The Under 14 had a very competitive internal trial on Saturday. Both sides relished the opportunity to play a full game of rugby and showcase their skills and talents. Both sides played with a physicality often not seen in internal games, but what has become a hallmark of the way this age group trains and plays no one was willing to take a backwards step. It was great to have a game on a sunny Saturday morning and congratulations to all participants in the age group for the way they conducted themselves.

U13

In the under 13 match there was an even mix of day students and boarders playing. Day students started strongly after winning the toss with a try in the first few minutes. The boarders then pressured the day students line and scored through Will Denovan. Both teams then played some good rugby with the ball being transferred from side to side. After the day students were awarded a penalty close to the boards line Robbie Heath took a quick tap and passed to Charlie Miller who scored to put the day students in front.

After a mistake from the kick off the boarders again cracked the day students line after building many phases of play. With the score even Charlie Miller did a superb kick off that ended in the boarders in goal. A fantastic chase by the day students saw a try scored putting them up by one try.

Another mistake from the kick off saw the boarders again pressure the try line of the day students with only one minute to go the boarders careered their way over the line to snatch a draw in a fantastically entertaining match.

Football

1st 11 v Blayney 7 August 2021

It was another cool day in Blayney and despite the torrential rain of the week prior the Blaney Showground was good underfoot. The two teams had quite a rivalry this year with the two previous meetings seeing a victory for either side.

The game started sharply with KWS in control of possession but Blayney lightning on the counter attack the 1st half was very entertaining. At half time the score was 0-0 and both teams had chances to take the lead. KWS had hit the crossbar and Oli Charlton had made some strong saves for KWS.

The second half was a scramble and whilst KWS dominated field position there were no clear openings. Griff Robinson, Carlie Willis and Charlie Williams all worked hard in the middle of the pitch with Fraser Molloy’s pace causing troubles down the right. It was a classic pinball moment in the box which Oli Spora’s toe got to stabbing home the first of the match. With Blayney now coming out to KWS a little more there was more space for the attack which led to Liam Bracks stepping inside his defender and casually slotting the ball into the top right corner of the goal for the win.

Hockey

KWS U14 Raptors vs KWS Spurs

In Round 14 the Raptors played the Spurs on the Mavis Davis Field. Bianca Wong and Paris Mills were the umpires. We started with an under-strength team with some of our boarders prevented from playing. Katie Ivey had volunteered to be goalie but her absence saw Abby Ker step up to act as goalie again. Lucinda Clinton generously helped the Spurs until some late players arrived for them and she played in her usual determined way all through the game. Zoe Wood scored 4 of the teams 5 goals with Sophie Luelf scoring the other one. Both girls ran and ran and the term raptor really was a good description of the forwards and mid-fielders this week. I’m not sure who decided to call the team the Raptors but as the term comes from the Latin term ‘rapio’ meaning to seize or take by force it suits the determined way the girls have played. Hannah Jones again played strongly in the mid field. Katie Lawler, Nancy Straw, and Ruby de Vries did their defensive jobs well. Clare Wood played a very impressive game seizing several balls through good tackling. As always, I was impressed and proud of the girls and how they played with determination and good sportsmanship – or should that be good sportspersonship?

KWS U14 Spurs vs KWS Raptors

Last Friday the Spurs took on KWS Raptors. Thanks once again to covid we were missing more than half our team but managed to scrape together seven girls so in true Spurs fashion we played on!

It amazes me as I watch our team play each week, the girls have continued to develop their skills in both attack and defence and every week we are competitive, right up until the last siren.

It was incredibly hard for the girls to play an almost full team when we were 4 short of fielding a full side but the consistent tackling of Claire and Jess in fullback, Annabelle and McKenzie in mid and the exciting attack of Alloway and Poppy made for an action-packed and very exciting game. A huge thanks goes to Sianabel who has already taken her turn in goals but volunteered once again and thwarted many a shot at goal, running out at the opposition and attacking the ball. She even stopped high shots that were undercut right at her, absolutely fearless and consistently amazing! Another huge thanks to Ebony who came down and helped out for the second half; your support, skill and enthusiasm was very welcome 😊

KWS U14 Knicks vs OAGS

The Knicks have been building and improving over the last few weeks. In the second half of this game the team really started to show signs of improvement. We managed to transfer the ball multiple times, finding the space on the field with ease. This has been a work in progress and was pleasing to watch.

Phoebe Hunter was rock solid in defence and gave the opposition very little opportunity in the circle. With a rotation through positions, we discovered some hidden talents. Grace played well up front using her elimination skills to create havoc in attack and Luca did a fantastic job at the back. Well done to Issy Johnson who demonstrated a high level of involvement in three different positions on the night.

Hopefully we can continue to play this brand of hockey.

KWS U14 Lakers vs Molong

The mighty Lakers had a double header last Friday evening; this was going to test us as several KWS boarders were unavailable to play due to COVID testing. Luckily McKenzie Gauci was happy to play her game at 4.30pm and BOTH of our games at 5.30pm and 6.30pm! Olly Gerard also brought his speed and skill to our team and everyone was grateful for his assistance on the pitch.

The team played two tough games, narrowly going down 2-1 in their first game against the Molong Killer Whales. There was some great teamwork displayed with the ball being passed around and tactics on display for all to learn from.

Our second game saw us up against the leading team in the competition, CYMS Bandits. This was a hard-fought game and the 4-2 loss on the scoreboard does not do justice to the efforts of all who played. McKenzie even scored for us! Well-done Lakers, I'm proud of you!

KWS U16 Cavaliers vs OAGS

The Cavaliers have had two outings this week. On Monday night we played the OAGS mixed side. This was a very entertaining game as our girls used their skill and enthusiasm to counter the boys speed and strength advantage.

Two short corners and a goal against the run of play saw us go down 3-0. Bree and Ava continued their outstanding improvement and it was good to see the return of Phoebe Poole and Taylah Hobbs. Maka played very well in goal to deny many good chances.

KWS U16 Cavaliers vs KWS Heat

On Tuesday afternoon it was the battle of the KWS teams as we took on Aunty Deb’s Heat. This is usually a close and enjoyable match up and proved to be yet again.

‘Kearlie’, April and ‘Hats’ played very well as did Tara on her return from injury. In the end the Cavs managed to scrape home 2-0.

KWS U16 Heat vs Cavaliers

A good quality game of hockey played on a Tuesday afternoon. With Phoebe missing from the Heat team, it was always going to be a tough game. To the credit of the Heat, they really gave it everything. Lucy Scammel worked hard through the middle of the field and provided some genuine opportunities for the Heat to score up front. Charlotte Ivey demonstrated the improvements that she has made this year and was a handful for the Cavaliers down the sideline. Unfortunately, despite some excellent play the Heat were unable to finish in the circle. Eventually losing 2-0 in a score line that did not reflect the effort put in by the Heat.

KWS U18 Warriors vs KWS Mavericks

The mighty KWS U18 Warriors enjoyed a second successive victory in as many weeks with a strong showing against the, albeit slightly depleted, KWS Mavericks side. Annabelle Woods was player of the round, making numerous interceptions and amazing runs from the centre of midfield. She was ably supported by Sally Carter, who performed for both sides on the night as we loaned several players to cover some missing Year 12 students. The girls all enjoyed themselves, with the game being played in great spirits by both sides. The final scoreline, 3-0, did not necessarily reflect the dominance of the Warriors but it did highlight the need for more finishing practice when shooting!

KWS U18 Bulls vs CYMS

The Bulls came into the game against the ladder leaders hoping to protect their undefeated status. Fergus Connick gave it everything in goals and kept the opposition to one goal for the game. With plenty of mid-field run throughout the game the Bulls really looked dangerous at times. James Glasson worked hard in the middle and Luke Dominello showed off his elimination skills. Fitness started to prevail late in the second half with the game swinging towards the Bulls. Unfortunately, despite numerous opportunities we were unable to best the State U15 goalie CYMS had. The Bulls have been defeated!

KWS U18 Timberwolves vs KWS Hornets

Timberwolves squared off against a determined and full-strength Hornets outfit on 9 August. Timberwolves could only field ten players and enjoyed most of the possession and field position in the 1st half. A well worked goal by Luke, Charlie Tink, Dylan and Gus helped Timberwolves to a 1-nil lead at half time.

Donny, Prayas, Sandy and Will Kerr continue improving every week. Their reliable play adds to team confidence, and they have earned respect from fellow players (and opponents) as valuable contributors to the Timberwolves team.

Despite missing the contribution from Matt, Jackson and Blake through absence, Timberwolves managed to convert four more from clever, early passing and lead up play by our midfielders and Central defenders Luke and Thomas

At half time we decided to play smarter hockey by using width and depth. It was pleasing to see yet again when the Timberwolves decided to adjust and improve they did.

Gus scored a well-deserved goal after his usual non-stop running effort in the midfield. Dylan and Charlie were determined to reward their team-mates' improved play with nice finishes in the second half.

Mac Webster was flawless as goalie, keeping the skillful Hornets scoreless.

Thanks Hornets, your skillful play and determined effort really made Timberwolves work hard and they had to lift their game for you.

KWS U18 Mavericks vs KWS Bulls

Mavericks fought bravely against the KWS Bulls in what will most likely be our final match of the season and for some the final match of their high school hockey career. Special mention goes to Lily McFeeters, Claudia St Clair and Annabelle Brag who showed up to play at full strength regardless of the impending and universally dreaded English trial exam. Over the season the girls have come together as a team, had many laughs, and enjoyed their hockey.

KWS U18 Hornets vs KWS Timberwolves

Last week the Hornets played the mighty Timberwolves. The girls stood up to the boys as best they could however the boys won this time. Liv Ferguson was skillful all over the field and demonstrated she can play anywhere. Lucy Gilbert and Matilda O'Reilly made some crucial tackles, never gave up and were instrumental in shutting down the Timberwolves attack. Great teamwork from the forward pack gave us a few goal opportunities but unfortunately, we couldn't put them away. It is nice to see drills we learn at training used in the games and the KWS teams playing in such high spirits.
